I am posting this on behalf of Ryelle.
The citizens of my capital of Esperanza, upon hearing tales of the catastrophe in the rift of Ursor, vowed that they would undertake to move into the area and Heal the Land. Through the powerful incantations of my mages, a Tenaril's Spell teleported my brave citizens to the edge of the rift.
Hardy diplomats, brave merchants and intrepid warriors will be making their way to Rift locations over the next few days. I will be posting the results of their journeys here.
Wish me luck!

The Rift's Ribs of the Devil Visited | | Sent By: | System | | Received By: | You | | Date: | 12/15/2011 9:50:10 AM | Your units report that a large number of huge arches of pure granite vault high above their heads, enclosing them in a pillared stone tomb.
The sky above is darkened by the yellow sulphurous clouds that hiss and vent into the surrounding, permeating everything and soaking into the skin.
All your units report, to a man, an oppressive and pervading sense of the unnatural in this place, and many appear to have heard a deep and rhythmic thumping under their feet - like a slow-beating heart, or something terrible trying to escape from the fiery depths below.
Despite their bravery on the field of battle, they do not wish to tarry in this place and wish to head home.
Note: This was scouts. Same result from scouts and spies. |

The Rift's Summoning Place Visited | | Sent By: | System | | Received By: | You | | Date: | 12/15/2011 9:30:45 AM | Five molten fountains of lava burst forth from this platform in a coruscating mire of heat, light and sound.
The plumes groan and roar with the screams of the tortured earth below.
Your units fear to enter the ground enclosed by the pillars, and even if they could stand the waves of heat emanating from the core, a tangible sense of unknown and terrible horror lies within.
Having done all they can at this fearful place, they head home.

The Rift's Tooth Visited | | Sent By: | System | | Received By: | You | | Date: | 12/15/2011 10:00:54 AM | Your group carefully picks a path down the steep cliffsides, until they can get a clear view of this ghastly vista.
A mottled and burning spike of stone has been thrust up from the bubbling river of magma at the bottom of the chasm.
The waves of heat mean that your group cannot approach too closely, but the leader of your group swears that he can see what looks like glowing runes of fire inscribed in its surface.

The Rift's Obelisk Visited | | Sent By: | System | | Received By: | You | | Date: | 12/15/2011 9:27:43 AM | Dark sigils writhe and twist, glowing with pulses of orange and red across the sides of the stone obelisk.
Your units report that after observing the obelisk for a while, a sense of impending doom permeated their thoughts and, despite the heat, they felt chilled to the marrow.
The groups' enterprising leader tried to take a copy of the glowing sigils, but discovered that every copy he made was somehow wrong, and he gave up in frustration.

The Rift's Sacrificial Altar Visited | | Sent By: | System | | Received By: | You | | Date: | 12/15/2011 10:06:01 AM | A curved plinth of glowing rock with drainage gutters oozing blood-red magma dominates the scene.
Three squat and burning pillars surround the north-west side, as though they were places for giants to sit and observe the plinth in front of them, or perhaps sentinels, set to protect the altar from intruders.
Your group reports that they were unable to approach too near due to the fearsome heat pouring off the truncated pillars. |

So far thieves have reported the same results at the altar and the obelisk. Apparently my thieves are not any more literate than my scouts or spies. You would think with the books it takes to make em they could figure out the sigils!
Same result with saboteurs as well.

This is the result of sending one cow to the altar. The delivery report was completely empty. (Did not even list the cow as having been in the caravan.) However, the caravan is coming back without the cow.

Update
Ryelle received a missive from Archdruid Nesse of the Dwarven Druids. He indicated that one of their most profound philosophers, DEMIDaS, will shortly join the citizens of my city in their scientific explorations. Conferences featuring refreshments of stale donuts and bad coffee are being planned.
There has been much activity at the Rift, including harvesting caravans at Ryelle's sov spot at the obelisk. Many diplomatic units as well as some military units have been seen coming and going. Otherwise all is quiet.

One question: Where is that tower exactly?
A mage employed by the Circle of Five was conducting advanced research into magickal uses for the body parts of animals.
Working alone in his tower in Ursor, he had recently reported that he was close to a research breakthrough and was preparing a Rite Of Summoning, with the assistance of some Shamans from the Blood Reavers. |

Ryelle sent a sacrifice of one cow to the altar. The number of troops did not appear to be related to the cow sacrifice.
Perhaps if she sacrifices another cow, the skeleton armies will no longer attack her at the obelisk. Her mages, priests and generals are taking this idea under consideration.
Meantime, she is making more troops.

When I asked Ryelle about this, she got quite indignant. This was her reply:
I may or may not be in league with the devil, but I assure you I am most certainly not in league with the DEVs. My armies did mysteriously multiply after one of the attacks by the undead armies on my city. The cause of this is not known. Cow sacrifice? Perhaps.

They have not attacked faction camps that I've seen. There are many faction camps in the area. I will ask Ryelle to forward you a report so you can check the stats on the skeletons.

Rill, please give my best wishes to Ryelle in all that she is doing to save the world from this rift. I will help as I can.

Theories so far:
1. They spawn in darkness and hide in daylight. 2. They reproduce from cows (or other) sacrifices. 3. They reproduce from enemy deaths. (I don't think this is likely) 4. They hover around randomly and attack squares they are headed towards. 5. Perhaps they head towards enemy units in particular. (again this seem unlikely at the moment) 6. A few strong and reinforced armys in the area would likely reduce their numbers as it would mean fewer deaths to players and allow more deaths to the undead. 7. (LadyLuvs suggested this to me) Perhaps this is just a method of testing future faction troops. 8. They learn from previous exploration and adjust accordingly. (Again not enough evidence yet.)
Ill add more as they come to me.

LadyLuvs is one smart cookie. Could also relate to pathfinding, since these troops seem "aware" of things they are passing over enough to know that they are an army and should attack them rather than proceeding directly from point A to point B.

No matter what may come out of this I think it is safe to say that T? is concerned for Ryelle's safety if AC is any kind of guage.

They did not attack faction but they did attack NPC animals, i watched 3 groups smash against some salamanders some 10 tiles north from rift.

Interesting. Good to know if this is how future factions will respond to hostile npc's within their domain.

I have Charioteers moving to defend the Devil's Ribs ( I've never said that before) so if I hit someone there, be assured it was unintentional. Probably.

That's possible they eat theire enemies... or maybe take them into the Underworld to make them live again... as undeads... and fight against the living. Skeleton armies seem to be bigger no?
About the strange fact that Ryelle saw her defencive army reinforced... if between the ones that were underattacked, she was the onlyone who had a killing rune in her city... we can't be sure this is a bug or not as far as someone else isn't attacke by skeletons, while being proteckted by a killing Rune. Maybe magical power has a revival effect on these undeads.

Kind of sounds like the devs have been watching Legend of the Seeker re-runs.

I just sent an army to occupy:
http://elgea.illyriad.co.uk/#/World/Map/535/834" rel="nofollow - http://elgea.illyriad.co.uk/#/World/Map/535/834
The army is a T? Explorer's force, with several sages and arcane researchers interested in the mysteries of the area. They are carrying mystical instrumentation, ancient books, and all the needed for many different experiments we plan to do in the place.
It is a small force of voluntaries and any player in T? or NAP with T? can join the place where the force will camp.
They will be there in about 24h.

The FTG is willing to offer any assistance it can possibly provide. Be it resources or weapons or even troops, we will throw our support behind this international effort to figure out and to understand The Rift.

I would be interested to know, when Ryelle's commander died, was the army stationed on one of the rift squares, and if so, was she still allowed to resurrect it?

I think these activated standing stones act as spawn places for the undead, anybody seen skeletons come out of one? Or just go to one?

I have two activated stones near me and I just found a skeleton nearby. I didn't see whether it was spawned from there though.

Yes, Ryelle is able to resurrect the commander who died at the Obelisk in the Rift. She's just not sure if she ought to ...

I wonder if they are planning to attack players at random or something. And if they do, will they only attack certain players (certain pop, etc.) or just anyone who is in their way?

I've attacked a few NPC armies stationed on activated stones near my cities. My victorious troops retrieved no gold at all.
I'm also occupying those activated stones, no action so far. Perhaps something will happen on the next NPC spawn time.

Someone on global chat, I forget who, mentioned she held sovereignty over a site where the standing stones had been activated.

They are spawning from the stones!? I've seen the stones absorb them, but none have jumped out. I'm occupying one in my back yard. Will continue to report.

There're quite a few of them in Kul Tar now, as well as the activated stones.
