What are these forum points?

how do i get points?

how did these points land in the forums?

I believe that the points are part of the recent upgrade to the forums described in this post

So far each post seems to count for one "point." I observe that we can now rate topics, perhaps high-rated posts will generate more points?

All forums I know have some scoring system. When I looked at this thread Rill's answer was shown with 4 of 5 stars and a rank of "postmaster" for 790 points, and your question was shown with 2 of 5 points with a rank of "greenhorn" for 72 points. Presumably this reply will create my second point. I'll test the "rate" thing for your good question :-)

People also seem to get points for being thanked, since I've thanked some people and seen their points go up.

ACK, apparently posts and replies create forum points for the poster, while "thanks" for a post or reply give a point to another forum member. OTOH the rating is used to identify good, bad, or ugly topics; it has nothing to do with the points: My "good" (4) rating for this thread resulted in an average of "good", as there was no other rating at this time.
