The World Map centered on my Capital has a variety of features. It is very pretty, too.   
Can I somehow "harvest/mine/exploit" these for my economy? If yes, how?
Do these features offer different combat pros/cons? If yes, is there a table that will teach me so I can make use of the pros and avoid the cons in battle?

Hi there, Yes, and yes! You can harvest resources, using caravans to do so, by finding squares that have pulsing resource piles on them, such as this one (indicating there is wood to be gathered here).
