I've been playing for a few weeks and have 47K mana stored.

My usage of mana is minute compared to my rate of accumulation, so I'm wondering what it's all for. Does one only start to burn through it once one has multiple settlements or starts scrapping, or am I missing something even at an early stage?

A spellshield! And upping your rank in a rather pointless way :)

When people cast offensive spells on you with a duration and you want to get rid of that spell with a "dispell" spell then you have to use more spellpoer than he does.
And when you start getting multiple cities where you want to cast your enhancement spells such as Natures Bounty then you need a high income to be able to sustain a high number of spells.
And lastly, offensive spells cost mana to cast, so if you want to cast a lot of themyou better have a deep mana resevoir. But I agree that untill mana gets multiple uses you tend to get a riddiculous amount stored.

A good spell shield can be quite expensive to cast.  A "shield" spell is a relatively innocuous blight that you cast on a friend's city to prevent other blights from being cast.  In order to be protective, the spell must have enough mana on it to overcome extra mana added by another player.

It is not unheard of for large players to cast shield spells with a million or more mana.

In a time of war, protection from random loss of horses, swords and other advanced resources required to replace troops can make such a spell shield worthwhile.

Since one-time blights cannot be dispelled, the only option to avoid the effects of these spells at this time is the spell shield.

My mana is used on spells i cast to my alliance members to help them out - when you cast 20 geomancy spells to help your members the mana count starts to get a bit steep
