So what gives with mountains being bad city locations?
That is counter intuitive.

Perhaps some people dislike mountains for the units that they prefer.  They could also dislike mountains because there's more iron then stone, or vice versa.

K so the advice I was given in GC that mountains meant sieges that where impossible to defend against was BS?

to defend against sieging trueshot army whit their cracked up stats you mean?
send a heavy, and i mean HEAVY ( at least twice as many) T2 infantry army out...whit the right commander you should be able to deal whit that issue.
...
best would be to guess the square were the siege camp is going to and send your bow people there to wait for the camp...yer die, but it will be easier to wipe the camp out whit the above mentioned Infantry

Mountains THEMSELVES are okay to settle on, in fiact they're the best thing to move onto, but sieges from mountains are much harder to destroy then sieges from, say, forests.  (Infantry has a breeze taking archers out of forests, it's the other way around with mountains)

As a clairification on the nature of siege, a siege attacks from a square neighboring your city, not from the square your city is on.

Ideally a city on mountains surrounded by plains would be great in terms of defense.

Mountains can give you sovereignity boost for chain, swords, plate and infantry but yes sieges defended on a mountain by alot of archers is hard to kill.

All in all I find it worth building cities on mountains.

I have never seen a mountain with 7 farms.....
That's the major downside IMO, but for the rest, yes mountains rule !

you teleported there right sloter ?
normally a mountain would not hold 7 farms as terrain to settle on. Otherwise you indeed have a rare discovery

mountains with 6 food tiles are plenty.
They generally have two resource tiles less in total (distributions like 7 4 3 3 6)

I think these 6 food tile mountains are wooded mountains so I am not sure if the wood negative to raunge counters the mountain positive to range in regards overall defenses bonuses.

You are right Iduna, i did move 7 farm cities there when move was enabled.I was lucky enough to find good spots for them in Midddle kingdom.

As for settling on mountains i would advise against it.If someone is forced to defend from behind city walls battle is probably lost and no amount of def bonus from high ground will help, success of any siege is resolved in siege camp location and its ability to pound enemy city and survive attacks, and not in battle within city that is targeted.

Best way to protect your city is to settle on 7 farm land, that will enable training large armies that are far more effctiv in both def and off then any high ground.Just compare that 20k troops (евен 30к if you try real hard) you can have in 7 farm city to 10k troops that you would have on 5 farm mountain. It is simply not worth to settle any land that has less then 7 farms. Not to mention that 7 farms will alow you to grow faster since you will spend less time upgrading farms and more time building high pop buildings, and get more pop faster and thus more cities sooner with less effort. What better protection to your cities then strong acount you can have. With more taxes you could also use more sovs to increas troop production or advance res production.Ability to outproduce other guy in 2:1 or even 3:1 ratio in troop training is significant advantage you should not discard by making 5 farm city.
