Subject: San Francisco Meet & Greet with Devs

Folks, GMs Stormcrow and Thundercat will be in the San Francisco Bay Area on Nov 1-2 and have graciously agreed to submit to an evening of pub-crawling and fan adoration!

Gryzelda and I will be coordinating this fantabulous event, but we can use all the help we can get.  If you can be in San Francisco on the evening of Nov 1 or 2 (date not yet firm), please post here so we can get an idea of the numbers.

If you would be interested in helping coordinate the event, say by helping create Facebook announcements, maps, answering questions, or buying drinks for the devs, please post that too!

We are also looking for suggestions of restaurants or pubs that would make good venues.

Thanks again to our awesome dev team!

Rill

Oh, I don't want to miss this. What a great excuse to drive up to my cool, foggy hometown! Barring something unchangeable coming my way, I will plan on being there. And I do have a couple of location ideas, but it's been too long since I was there. I'll try to do a little scouting next time I'm up.
Great idea, Rill!! And I can't wait to meet all of you!!

New date for the meet and greet: Thursday, November 3.  This will give the devs a chance to recover from their meeting with the Google people.

We still need volunteers to help scope out venues.  Who wants to join Gryz and me to check out some bars?

This sounds fun!  I might be available for this!  I work in SF.

If I can send pub recommendations, what are you looking for?  A dive?  A hole in the wall?  An Irish pub?  A food/beer joint?

Do you have a neighborhood in mind?  Mission?  Soma?

Can't wait!

We are looking for something accessible by public transit, and we need a grand piano!!!

Posted By: Bartozzi
Date Posted: 30 Aug 2011 at 20:52
It doesn't necessarily have to be a grand piano. An upright would be fine too.
And let's not make this a deciding factor, next to accessibility and comfort, which should take precedence.

I'll be in town later this week, and will see if I can't get out for a little scouting. I'm thinking about the bar/lounge at Market and Valencia (across the street from Martuni's); I actually used to play and sing there, but they've remodeled a few times since...

Yep, to confirm...

I will be there, as will GM Cerberus.  TC sadly can't make it, and will be sorely missed.  GM Cerberus has graciously promised to drink TC's share, however, and we look forward to taking him to ER later in the evening.

And yes, T-shirts will be there for all.

Looking forward to it greatly.

I know of a bar in Oakland, CA that has a grand piano.
It's called "The Alley" and it is near Lake Merritt.

I recommend you meet at:
Edinburgh Castle Pub
http://www.castlenews.com/
(I do not think it has a piano, but ... um ... it's like a castle.)

I think Lefty O'Doul's has a piano, though.

The Alley has a grand piano, but normally it has a permanent resident taking requests. Patrons put in requests to sing along to classics accompanied by the pianist. It's a piano bar, but quite a unique place as it's far from posh. Even though I live within walking distance, I've only ever gone one time, so I don't know if they have special nights where other folks can tickle the ivories.

This all sounds rather excellent... although rather inconvenient for UK dwellers like myself. I'll guess I'll have to wait for a different T-shirt opportunity. :/

What is this meeting with Google about anyways? Is it top secret? I assume TC/SC are just visiting the US for a short while? You guys are based in England or Wales or summat right? I know SC loves F1 so he must be English. Big smile

Anyways... take lots of pics, I want to see Cerb inebriated.

Createure, I think it's some sort of HTML 5 conference.

And thanks for the awesome tips!  I hope y'all are planning to come!

I don't know about the schedule...  I have been there both when there is a piano player and when there isn't...

Do you remember the parking attendant under the freeway there (across from the Grand Lake Theater)?  I used to carpool a lot, and they used to pay someone to direct traffic under the freeway.  Anyway, the guy they hired was an opera singer, and he would sing all morning while directing traffic.  And the acoustics under the freeway were really cool!

I'm telling you this because HE used to be the guy that played the grand at The Alley.  But I haven't seen him in a long time.... though to own the complete truth I don't have time to go out very often anymore. :D

Date Posted: 22 Sep 2011 at 09:13
Hmm. I used to casual carpool under the freeway there and no one was directing traffic, but that was well over 10 yrs ago. The regular pianist/singer is Rod Dibble, who's been at it for 50 years at The Alley.

Anyone know the owners well enough to explore whether we could let Stormcrow and Garthen turns at the piano?  We can provide tapes to demonstrate their ability!

Y'know, I still have somewhat of a name in certain circles around SF as a pianist. Depending on the venue, I may be able to provide some references..or, I can also go in and talk to an owner/manager beforehand, assuming I get up to SF before Nov. 3rd.

OK, to finalize our choice of venue, we need a head count.

Who will be joining us for dinner, and who just for drinks and carousing after?

Thanks!

Dinner!? Oh, boy! I miss SF restaurants!! Count me in!!

Posted By: GM Stormcrow
Date Posted: 24 Oct 2011 at 02:21
Alrighty then.

All we need now is for the great organizer, Rill, to decide on when and where, and set it in stone!

GM Thundercat won't be there, sadly, as he flies back to London at 8pm that day.

I (GM Stormcrow) won't be in SF downtown till about 7.30pm (don't ask why, very complicated, but I re-arrive in SF on an International flight at 5.20pm).

However, GM Cerberus is in SF all day, and will be around wherever and whenever it starts.

So, Rill, you're tasked with choosing venue!

Piano is entirely unimportant as, despite who may or may not be able to play one, in my experience bars and venues don't like uninvited people sitting down at them and playing them :)

All we need is a fun place to meet where we Illy-heads can meet, talk and have some fun!

And this responsibility is hereby left in Rill's hands.

SC

You can't say something is very complicated and expect people (or at least me) to not be instantly interested as to why...

So why? =D

Rill, if there is anything I can do to assist you on my end, let me know.

And don't have too much fun without me. :)

Indeed it does sound liek a right crack - I too am a little jealous.

I hope there is pics - and I hope some of you guys going think of more interesting things to ask SC than "When will you read that petition I submitted on June 17th?".

@Rill: If you manage to get SC plastered I'll send you 100 cows.

So... did we pick a time and place?  Is SF more convenient than, say, the East Bay?

I was thinking that, if it's November 2nd for a choice, we might want to do a "Day of the Dead" themed thing.  We can check out the altars, have some terrific tacos, find a place to get some tequila shots, do the procession and check out Balmy Alley.

That's all a unique SF experience.

Still working on finalizing the plans.  Date is November 3, location will be in San Francisco.

Still could be a good time to do a Day of the Dead celebration!  Less crowds, altars all to ourselves, great Mexican food and drink...

OK, here's the deal.  The people who have actually contacted me or Gryzelda (Thanks folks!) will be meeting us at 7 p.m. for dinner.  After dinner, probably around 9 p.m., we will be heading to Kennedy's Irish pub  http://www.kennedyscurry.com/" rel="nofollow - http://www.kennedyscurry.com/ .  Anyone who hasn't gotten around to letting us know you're coming, please join us there for continued carousing.

Thanks again to GM Stormcrow and GM Cerberus for your willingness to come out and meet the fans!

All:

I have it on very good authority that SC's favorite shot is a "Screaming Dead Nazi". It is made by putting a double jigger each of: Rumpleminz (or any other peppermint shnapps), Jaggermeister, and Kahlua with a liberal splash of tabasco. (no ice)

Although I won't be there, unfortunately, to attend, please make sure you buy him many, many of these!

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that "screaming dead nazis" do not comply with the code of conduct.

I suggest that it be substituted with a glass of milk and some cookies instead.
