this could be a pretty hefty research or some kidn fo hefty cost or what have you. I am just so tired of being a human and want to be able to have the option to become a elf, or a orc like that "snaps fingers" so maybe a research for this?

It's just a game. :)

Maybe you can hire some units in thr future, but i don't think changing race will be a good idea

human is awesome anyways... personally I think elf is the best race, but human comes a very close second (though many will put human in 1st place)... orc is generally put in 3rd place, and dwarf is invariably put in 4th place (slow cavalry and most other units is just a complete killer with such a huge world map to travel around in.)

Maybe if you are completely wiped out(all cities seiged) you could have a chance to start as a new race, but changing mid game with your cities would be a fairly large advantage especially if your troops change race ie start as an elf build huge number of cheap archers then swap to human later for better cav

Way to make me feel even worse about being a dwarf...

The GM's could make it a one time thing, possibly with some hugely extortionate (and i really do mean HUGELY) cost, maybe include a high prestige cost.

Despite all of that cost it would still be a one time thing.. Me, for example would like to change to an elf, because i live with the turyin elves, in a big forest (which isn;t nice for my cav.)

Or you could make it a reset button- so that you get to keep your player name, but you start again from complete scratch as a new race

It would be a pretty substantial account detail or game mechanic to change.  I always felt that conquering cities should work similarly to Age of Wonders:  the conquered city stays its original race unless you re-seed it with settlers, and you can only transition an owned city to a race that you already have in another city.

I also liked how in Age of Wonders (similar to the Total War series) some army was required to keep peace and the population happy (more for higher populations, much more for an unhappy one).  Happiness was hugely impacted by such things as displacing a race from its home, being newly conquered, or being forced to associate/live in proximity (nearby armies and cities) with a race of different moral alignment--a source of unhappiness which could also cause military units to disband as well as cities to declare independence, and which socially-skilled heroes (commanders) could counteract.
