Subject: 01FEB11 - UI v2 Rolled Back
Date Posted: 02 Feb 2011 at 00:16
Hi All,
We went live with the UI v2 at 0100 this morning, and rolled back to the old version just after 0200.
We rolled back because we felt there were too many issues (two of particular note) to keep the new UI running as the "only option available to players".
Please note that this rollback doesn't affect any ingame occurrences (troop movements, building queues etc) - it was a User Interface rollback, not a Database rollback.
At some point today (02FEB11) we're going to post a link to the UI v2 held on a separate instance; but reading the same underlying data. Players who prefer to explore the UI v2 - and especially those players who wish to help us track down the bugs that were experienced during the brief uptime - will be able to.
[edit: http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/01feb11-ui-v2-rolled-back_topic1500_post14161.html#14161 - see here ]
Apologies, naturally and heartfelt, for this rollback.
No matter how much one tests things, there's no substitute for having real players from real environments (operating systems, antivirus software, browsers etc) using a system in anger and in volume - and that's exactly what we've just experienced.
Again, apologies.
SC
Hi All,
User Interface v2 Release #1
Yes, my friends... it's true. We said it'd happen today and - with barely an second to spare - we're into the downtime.
There's a whole bunch of changes with the new User Interface.
However, a quick heads-up.
During
the release process, some existing game functions are NOT currently
available as they are moved over from the old code base.
Functions that are Temporarily Unavailable in the new Version:
Strategic Map (the top level view of the entire world)Alliance Maps (the top level view of each Alliance Member's location)Alliance Forums (both public and private)
Relocate City option for New Players (in the Castle)
Demolish Buildings Page (in the Castle)Send Settlers Page (in the Castle)
New Player Tutorial (so please be extra helpful in Global Chat!)
Faction Standing Graphs (the graphs on the faction standings page)
Player Rankings / Leaderboard (individual player rankings are available, just not the whole ranking list of all players)
These functions will be made available again *very* shortly (by which we mean hours or days, not weeks).
Some other things we are aware of and are endeavouring to rectify:
Internet Explorer 7 browser does not show Global & Alliance Chat (this only affects IE7, not IE8).
The Opera browser automatically logs you out of the game at regular intervals and is currently deemed "unsupported"Safari 5 (running on a PC)
has issues with navigating around the World Map using the compass
buttons after a couple of clicks. This can be temporarily worked around
by either pressing "refresh" or by navigating to a different page and
then back to the World Map.
Whilst we will
fix these issues - and ask for your patience in the meantime - these
conditions affect less than 3% of our current user base. If you have
access to a decent, modern, properly implemented browser such as
Firefox, Chrome, Safari (on a Mac) or even IE8 then please use these
instead for the moment.
WHAT'S CHANGED IN THE NEW VERSION?
This shiny newness is almost entirely limited to a different presentation of existing ingame functionality.
You won't suddenly find unexpected occurrences, or things working in different ways (or at least, we hope not!)
Trade still works the same. Combat still works the same. Magic still works the same.
In fact, pretty much everything still works the same.
But it's slicker, faster, better, more intuitive and prettier.
For example, on the World Map alone, there are:
More than 70 new city graphicsMore than 200 new terrain tilesMany more levels of map zoom (up to 31x31 view: ie 961 squares!)Amazing map toggles to show or hide things, and there's a minimap to help you navigate around.
When the Downtime is finished, go check out some of the new buttons and summary pages.
However.
Not
all the functionality we intend to ultimately release is in this first
version of the UI, and the next few days will see a bunch of further
releases.
The key thing about this release is that it drags our entire codebase kicking and screaming out of the late 20th century.
This
means that future development tasks will all make use of a common set
of code libraries and behaviours to ensure a consistent - and
consistently more helpful and intuitive - player experience.
On a
purely practical level this means that adding the remaining things we
promised in http://forum.illyriad.co.uk/the-newness-18aug10_topic929.html - The Newness becomes a substantially quicker task for us.
Oh,
before I forget - one new piece of functionality Alliances should be
aware of is a New Alliance Role called "Edit Recruitment Status".
Alliance
players assigned this role (or SuperUsers) can - on the new "Alliance
Recruitment" page - choose whether their alliance is recruiting new
players or not. We're shortly going to bring in some functionality that
will allow players to search for alliances near them that are
recruiting, as well as for alliance recruiters to search for nearby new
players who aren't already in an alliance. Alliance Recruiters will also be able, in the future, to post recruitment adverts that will appear in the Herald.
So it's recommended
that (if you want new players to apply to join your alliance in the
future) you should set your Alliance Recruitment status to "Yes".
Finally...
This is a massive change to the way the Illyriad front-end works.
There are bound to be bugs we haven't caught.
We
know there are some areas that don't look as pretty as they should (the
mail system, for example has some formatting still to do), and these
will get fixed speedily.
One thing that we know works is the Petition system - so:
Please submit bugs using Petitions, although Please first check
the top of the Support page (where you write a New Petition) to see
whether we're aware of it already, in which case you don't need to let
us know, and finallyPlease hold off submitting Petitions not related to bugs for the next few days, as we simply won't get round to them.
With many, many thanks - and hoping you enjoy the new experience.
The Illyriad Team

When I click on a resource, the little box just follows my mouse around the map, which makes it impossible to click on the links inside of it. Other than that, it looks beautiful.

I have the same thing with all drop down menus on the new interface. I only had it in Mozilla though, I switched to IE and it's fine. I'll just use IE for now I guess.

A really nice feature I have noticed is the military button at the top of the screen. By clicking on the military button, it shows all of your units and enemy units about to attack or siege any of your towns. So now there is no guess work as to which army is a siege army or not.
A army on a square looks just like an army camps with tents and shows a yellow arrow toward the town it is targeting or maybe the town you have selected.
So yeah you put the pointer over the axe picture at the top and then select footprints. This tells you how many troops you have and any encampments nearby friendly or enemy and how many enemy troops are about to attack your towns.
By selecting the axe alone, this tells you which army will siege you or attack you etc...
Example...
Superperson sent 1222 troops eta date etc
You know exactly who sent the troops and how many they have sent. Plus you will know if the army is a siege army or not.
Strategy in this game has completely changed and I think the feint option is worthless now.

My webserver emailed me today that it cannot download towndata.xml. Does this mean the old format is discontinued now, or is that a temporary side-effect of the upgrade?

And in that hour, we got to see so much coolness, that, please, please, PLEASE let us be part of the final debugging, as, as long as the data isn't corrupted (something like Llyorn is actually a literate, cool, guy, after you're done) then it'll be fun!!!
Just tell us what to do and we're all over it!
Can't wait!

I'll replace my batteries before going there then, thanks for the tip
Sadly I missed the 1hr window where it was running, but I will certainly go there once the link is posted. You guys on the team are doing great work and I think most of us appreciate how difficult it must be to introduce a major upgrade like this, so don't worry about the delays, we'll be patient
Out of interest SC, when you do post the link, will that require a new account to be set up so we can test the system without any possible effect on our current play, or will it simply 'move' our existing accounts to it?

Hi all,
Thanks for the kind words and support, and this will only be an interim hiccup.

When we release the link to the new UI, it's the exact same server as your current account; and anything you do on the new UI will occur in the old UI gameworld as well (and vice versa). They co-exist and use all the same underlying data.
You'll be able to swap between the two UIs as you wish during the interim period.
Think of the old UI and the new UI simply as differently coloured pieces of glass held up in front of each of your eyes. You are still you and the world you see is still the same world - it's just coloured differently depending on which eye you look through.
You shouldn't really be worried about actions taken in the new UI
behaving differently from actions taken using the old UI - the business
logic behind the buttons hasn't changed, just the way things are
presented.
Regards,
SC

Ah, sort of like 'mirror' working then, I thought that might be how it would work, but I had to ask - thanks for taking the time to explain.
I will look forward to getting back from work later to give it a try, and I have a day off tomorrow so I can spend a lot of it playing around with the new system!!
I haven't annoyed you for a while with 'tickets', so this might give me the opportunity to catch up!

So when I clicked on The Herald, Illy tried to download a file and my security blocked it.
Is this a legit file that I should download?
Or did my security catch a baddie?

Hi all,
To confirm a couple of things regarding this pop-up blocker issue:
1. We're talking about the Old UI here? 2. What, precisely, are you clicking on when you get the message? ie, is it links within the Herald itself, and if so, which ones? Or is it when you click the "Herald" link from the left hand navigation window/options menu? Do you get it when you login for the first time and you are automatically "dumped" on the Herald page?
Cheers,
SC

After relaunching IE8 on windows XP, I get the download file pop-up blocker at Log in and when I click on the Options/Herald link, when the Herald page loads, the IE security blocks a file download and asks me if I want to download it. I have not downloaded the file.
Oh, and yes, this is the Old UI - this is currently happening to me.

UPDATE
2 issues some players are currently experiencing:
- Unwanted popups on the Herald that prompt security download issues, and
- An inability to login via some facebook accounts
... have both been traced to http://developers.facebook.com/live_status/#msg_725 - an internal bug in facebook that arose at 04:02 this morning.
We're sorry that this is affecting some users, but it will go away when facebook resolve their own issue - and there's nothing we can do about it ourselves, unless we start to disconnect facebook integration from Illyriad which we're loathe to do whilst facebook are attempting to resolve the bug.

Just a heads up that this isn't happening today, as you may have noticed.
We're going to make sure that UI v2 is in a "non-dangerous" state.
By "non-dangerous" we specifically mean that it doesn't confer an unnatural advantage over players who aren't in UI v2 (such as being able to tell the troop counts and intentions of an incoming hostile army, or being immediately informed when hostile diplomatic units have been dispatched against you, so you can immediately work out who sent them).
Once these major issues are dealt with we'll open up the UI v2 for general usage by those players who wish to explore it, make use of the additional functionality, and/or help us find bugs in it.
We expect to make UI v2 optionally available for the final bughunt/push sometime this coming weekend.

SC

I can't see any problem with it being like that when we try it out - call me foolhardy, but in the interests of the community, I'm willing to risk the danger Some people just have to take the fun out of things sometimes!
