Subject: Questions about Thieves

Hi all, i have many questions about Thieves. I will regroup all the questions to know exactly how Thieves work, as i may not be the only one who isn't totally clear with how to use thieves.

thanks in advance.

General questions:

1) what is the carrying capacity of a Thief? have simple Thief and advanced Thief the same carrying capacity?

2) what are exactly ALL the differences between simple and advanced thief?

3) can Thieves steal the weapons, in a city, that are in caravans and waiting to be bought on marketplace?

Runes and Thieves:

3) are Thieves  killed by the killing runes? (ex: Ward of Destruction).

4) can Thieves be afraided by terror runes? (ex: Ward of Insanity)

5) If they are killed of frightened by a rune, does the defender have a report to tell him who attacked him with Thieves?

Defending Thieves:

6) is there a difference of attacking power between simple and advanced Thieves?

7) does a Thief have the same attack and defence value? (unlike military units?)

8) when the Thieves passed thow the deffensive rune:
are all attacking Thieves blocked by simple and advanced defending Thieves? or are simple Thieves  blocked by simple Thieves, and advanced Thieves blocked by advanced Thieves?

9) when the attacking Thieves won against the defending ones:
- are the defending ones completly destroyed?
- are the attacking ones suffering casualties?

Visibility of the Defender:

10) is there a chance for the attacking Thieves to steal the ressources without being seen by the defender's Thieves? (without starting a fight) can the defender receive a repot to tell who stole him in this case?

11) if attacking Thieves killed all defending Thieves, does the defender have a chance to receive a report that tells who stole him?

12) if attacking Thieves were cought by defending ones, is there a chance that the defender doesn't receive a report that tells who tryed to steal him?

13) which factors can increase/decrease the visibility of the attacking Thieves for the defender? (difference of consulate level? difference of Thieves number/power? size of the defending city?

14) to sum up: the more attacking Thieves, the more chances to successfully steal a city without being known by the defender?

Edit: bonus question :p  : can we steal players who are in a NAP with us? in Confederation with us? can we steal our own alliance mates? can we steal ourself?

I'll give it a go...

1) what is the carrying capacity of a Thief? have simple Thief and advanced Thief the same carrying capacity?

50 for both.

2) what are exactly ALL the differences between simple and advanced thief?

Speed.  advanced thieves can carry Advanced Goods and Gold.  Basic thieves are basic resources only.

3) can Thieves steal the weapons, in a city, that are in caravans and waiting to be bought on marketplace?

It appears that this might protect stuff from thieves.  But I am uncertain.

Runes and Thieves:

3) are Thieves  killed by the killing runes? (ex: Ward of Destruction).

yes.

4) can Thieves be afraided by terror runes? (ex: Ward of Insanity)

yes.

5) If they are killed of frightened by a rune, does the defender have a report to tell him who attacked him with Thieves?

No.  Only the # and type of unit.  Not the owner's ID.

Defending Thieves:

6) is there a difference of attacking power between simple and advanced Thieves?

yes.  Only attack with Advanced.  Defend with Basic.

7) does a Thief have the same attack and defence value? (unlike military units?)

No.

8) when the Thieves passed thow the deffensive rune:
are all attacking Thieves blocked by simple and advanced defending Thieves? or are simple Thieves  blocked by simple Thieves, and advanced Thieves blocked by advanced Thieves?

Both are treated the same by Runes.  A basic thief defends best against both.

9) when the attacking Thieves won against the defending ones:
- are the defending ones completly destroyed?
- are the attacking ones suffering casualties?

Defenders never are destroyed.  If attackers lose, 100% lose.  This will change in future Illy releases, I am told.

Visibility of the Defender:

10) is there a chance for the attacking Thieves to steal the ressources without being seen by the defender's Thieves? (without starting a fight) can the defender receive a repot to tell who stole him in this case?

Interrogation will give the Defender a chance of ID'ing the attacker.  A theft will always result in a Shamed Face Quartermaster report.

11) if attacking Thieves killed all defending Thieves, does the defenfer have a chance to receive a report that tells who stole him?

See 10 above.

12) if attacking Thieves were cought by defending ones, is there a chance that the defender doesn't receive a report that tells who tryed to steal him?

Yes.  Most of the time this is the result until you have large #'s of defenders.

13) which factors can increase/decrease the visibility of the attacking Thieves for the defender? (difference of consulate level? difference of Thieves number/power? size of the defending city?

All of the above plus distance between Attacker and Defender.  Not "visibility", but success.  A defending city will "see" incoming hostile diplos at 1/2 consulate level + 5 Range.  So a maximum of 15 square alert.  However, Incoming hostile diplos always appear Red on the map so if you stumble upon them (or know who your assailant is), you may see the hostiles inbound before you recieve the formal alert.

Edit: bonus question :p  : can we steal players who are in a NAP with us? in Confederation with us? can we steal our own alliance mates?

Yes.

can we steal ourself?

If possible, this is likely a game cheat and would be treated harshly by the GM.

I suppose that a friend in your alliance may agree to sending thieves back and forth?  Then you will see exactly what happens and no real harm done?  Does that sound right?

It appears that I misread the question:

No 3a is yes.  The only way to protect against thieves is with other thieves, runes, or the vault.

1) Can't remember the exact numbers, but I know they're not the same, I think maybe 50 for basic theif and 25 for advanced theif.

2) Advanced thieves have twice as much upkeep, are slightly faster than basic thieves. Importantly advanced theives require saddle to train, a highly sought after resource. Basic theives can only steal basic resources and books and beer. Advanced theives can steal all advanced resources (horses, cattle, spears, bows, swords, leather, chain, plate, not seige blocks).

3) Yes. If that happens you will get a message telling you your trade has been cancelled.

4) Yes. The only units that are safe from killing runes are scouts and spies.

5) No. Nor with any other kind of rune.

6) Yes. I understand that advanced theives have a greater defensive power than basic theives... BUT basic thieves provide a better defence for their upkeep than advanced theives (more cost effective).

7) No. But exact numbers are unknown. At the moment it is assumed that all races have the same strength of diplomatic units.

8) All types of theives in a city will contribute towards defence.

9) Defending thieves never die. In all diplomatic missions though, either ALL your attacking units survive, or ALL your attacking units die.

10) Yes attackers can steal resources without being detected. The defender will just receive a report saying something like "your quartermaster reports there are some resources missing".

11) Defenders don't die.

12) Yes, the defender can capture the attackers who might then prefer to die rather than giving away who sent them. The defender can also capture/kill attackers after they complete a mission (though not for theft missions obviously).

13) A city with high theif defence has: A large number of theives at home, a high proportion of basic theives, a SMALL city, a high consulate level.

Obviously keeping your city small just to provide theif defence is pretty self defeating though, that rule is just to protect small players from big guys with 20,000 thieves.

You can't steal from yourself, alliance or confederation... everyone else is fair game though (though some more fair than others) Wink

@TD - you got 3) wrong, you misunderstood 8) the bonus question we are both wrong, you can ALSO steal from confederation members, but you cannot steal from your own alliance or youself. I'm not sure about 1).

As I said...I was uncertain.  I have not yet tested this.
8) the bonus question we are both wrong, you can ALSO steal from confederation members
I think that is what I said.  You can diplo anyone.  Diplo'ing yourself is considered a "cheat" by the GMs...Running up score, etc.  I recall a couple of players being lifetime banned for self-sabo'ing to speed building queues.

I'm not sure about 1).

I'm 99% certain.  50 carrying capacity for both adv and bas.

Hey, M31...I like your post.  I like your inqueries.  You've been thinking about Illy.  I enjoy these detailed discussions.  I get to help...and, as others show, I continue to learn.

20 for Basic 50 for Advanced according to Arcanum Illyria

Also there is the question of Rank score for thief attacking.
I have come to the conclusion that a successful thief attack gives you a rank increase equal to the gold upkeep of the thieves that are in the town that you are stealing from. I however lack the information to figure out the increase of rank when you are attacked and you catch the thieves or you send thieves and they all die. When I have sent thieves to a person and the attack failed their rank score increased by 30 points, three different times with varying amounts of thieves. So if anyone knows the answer speak!

Thanks The Dude and Createure for your detailled answers and corrections Smile

Obviously, just have to verify for the carrying capacity for simple and advanced thieves.

If steal ourself is considerd as a cheat to transport ressources faster, GM's may have already prevent people to be able to steal their own towns no?

Thanks, i do my best to understand the machinery of the game in details, and help the ones who will read this kind of topics.

I was sure i wasn't the only one who wasnt totally clear with thieves :), even if we are playing for a long time there are always details we dont know or forget. Personnally i never really used thieves, but now im thinking about to use them often, that's why i made this topic.

GODsDestroyer : about how to calculate ranking points earned by attacker or defender who uses thieves, i think that's a bit out of the subject because you can't reply to this question without talking about the ranking points you earn whith scout, spy, sabotage and assassination actions.

but if someone can explain how is that calculated, would be intersting to know as well :)

well i just verified for the points that wasn't clear:

so simple and advanced thives have the same carrying capacity and it's 50.

and you can steal your own cities. would be nice to know if this is really a game abuse or not :)

Back in May or June, a couple of players were discovered to be self-sabotaging to skip building levels...Place Con 10 and Con 11 in the queue, then sabo Con 10 early, recover the salvage, and Con 11 would complete without Con 10 ever having been built.

They were banned from Illy as I recall.  And the Devs changed the Sabos so they attack the queues randomly instead of sequentially.

I would suggest not using thieves as a speedy caravan substitute.  A one-off test like this will not concern the GMs, though.  Abuse of game loopholes is frowned upon by the GMs.

Yeh I'm sure people are welcome to do their best to find bugs in the game, that's fine. Just make sure you report them. ;)

And with UI_V2 I'm sure there will be some increadibly strange and intricate combinations of actions that only a player could come up with to create bugs... which i'm sure the dev team would LOVE to know about. Big smile

im not really sure that would be a game abuse, because it would ask many theives and so ask a high unkeep to have enough thieves to significally increase your carrying speed for only one city.
and anyway GM's will pull off the caravans limitation in the future updates and make these cost un upkeep.

if thieves steal from yourself , and you have thieves within the city, they will fight each other, we have stolen from ourselves and each other in the past, but you need to make sure the tieves and runes are down when stealing from friendlies

Well, I reckon that is one way to pump up your diplo score.  Sounds like abuse to me, though.

Posted By: SirTwitchy
Date Posted: 17 Jan 2011 at 23:43
It wasnt done to bump any score, only to see what would happen. I got my diplo score fair and square. But a mate was sieging a city while I was thieving it, he captured the city and my thieves then stole from him a few hours later. We then tried thieving from ourselves to see what happened, and were successful, this was months back and I dont know if it has changed

basic thieves steal books and beer, so am wondering if basics can take adv resources too but just have a lesser success rate for taking them or if its the amount of basic thieves sent or both factors

Posted By: Createure
Date Posted: 01 Jun 2011 at 12:52
 - basic theives can steal wood/clay/iron/stone/food/beer/books

 - advanced theives can steal the same as basic theives + gold/spear/sword/bow/saddle/leather/chain/plate
 - horses/cows/seige blocks cannot be stolen

 - the quantity of theif has no effect on type of resource taken - it is totally random within the limits of what the theives can take - if a theif takes ALL of the resource they are targetting [except that which is protected by the vault] they will randomly select another resource type to take, they will repeat this until there is no more resource left to steal, or the thieves reach their carry capacity.

Dear Newbes

Let me introduce Createure. He is from Harmless?  and he knows all there is to know about thieving. Now, if you have had anything stolen recently chances are that he did it. He can't help himself. LOL

During the last tournament WHICH HARMLESS? LOST everyone else was working hard to collect animal specimens. Creat however had an idea Lamp . Why go through all the hard work collecting them when you can steal somebody elses? So off he went and sent his thieves to DuQ of the Order of the Valar WHO WON THE TOURNAMENT.

Unfortunately for Creat the Devs had forseen that some one would try this and made sure that all specimens were held elsewhere.

So meet Creat. Not the brightest star in the Harmless? firmament but definitely the most light fingered. LOL

 1. - stealing animal parts was always impossible - it was announced in the release notes the day the tournament was released - yes I do read all the release notes.

2. - Even if I did think it was possible to steal animal parts - you're basically accusing me of playing the game and trying to win a tournament - wow I guess that makes me a real stupid villain.
Whilst you on the otherhand don't play the game - you have a little account to make public insults to people from while keeping the identity of your real account secret. Grow-up Aneirin.

I guess I can't even spend time helping a newbie without you launching another public attack on me.

I seem to remember you being removed from VALAR for making these same false accusations against me originally. It is only understandable that you hold a grudge I guess.

I'm not entirely sure what you expect to gain by trying to tarnish my reputation... the fact is nobody listens to what comes out your mouth anymore because all you do it insult people and troll all over the forum.

People know me through being friendly to people and helping out new guys and having a sense of humour, so I'm happy to let others judge my character after your comments.

Resurrecting this thread because it has a lot of good info, but not specifically the answers I'm looking for.

I realize the devs will not want to divulge specifics, but does anyone know how the theiving mechanic works?  Specifically wrt attack vs defense?

It seems that having more defense than attack is not a guarantee of defending, and vice versa; that is, there is some amount of chance involved in the difference is not overwhelming.  For example, I was at one point thieving from a suspended account, and after several successful attempts, I failed, even though the same number of theives were sent each time.  Someone recently posted in GC that they had the same experience.

My initial guess is that, when attack and defense are equal, there would be a 50% chance of success.  As the ratios change, the chance changes, probably in a nonlinear relationship (so that there is a 100% success/failure rate at some overwhelming ratio).  Has anyone done any testing?  I'd be willing to experiment with someone near me.

The exact formula is a "state secret".  But as I understand, there is always a chance of failure no matter how large the attacking force.  By the same token, a small attacker always has a chance of success against overwhelming odds.  I think there is a random number generator in the formula.

I know that everytime you send diplos there is a chance for success no matter how many attacker and defenders there are.
StJude once had 20 single diplo attacks sent at his city from Daufer and even though Jude had many more diplos in his city than were being sent, a few got past and reported a successful mission. I forget if they were spies or scouts but i know there is always a chance.

Also, I sent thieves at a suspended account and got by the defences 3 or 4 times before i was caught and lost all my thieves. I sent the same number every time and I know the city I was attacking wasnt making more, it had been suspended for some time already. So there is always a chance at failure too.
