Hi all,
We were informed today by a third-party forum
administrator that the UK1 Illyriad player you all know as Shrapnel (or his
alter-ego, Grog) died on Friday the 8th of October.
Case E. Deis' obituary can be read http://starbeacon.com/legacy/x1644187719/Case-E-Deis - here and you can express your condolences on the guest book there.
Shrapnel
was extremely well liked - helpful, friendly, full of good ideas and an
excellent leader - and he will be desperately missed by us all.
Our thoughts are with his widow and children at this time.
In sadness,
The Illyriad team

MERC offers whatever military protection can be mustered and help with diplomatic talks, free of charge to active FDU members till it is reformed and/or its members find themselves an alliance.

Wow - totally shocked. Here's an example of the kind of excellent player/person he was:
Sent By: Shrapnel Received By: KillerPoodle Sent: 07OCT10 15:59 Subject: Concerning Our Disagreement
KillerPoodle,
As you know, I have been very vocal and very opposed to the recent military actions of H? against CranK. I come to you now admitting that I made a mistake. I still disagree with your actions, but my mistake was the manor in which I disagreed. It was very aggressive and sometimes hostile. I apologize for this. Most H? memeber explained their point of view in a very clear and civil manor, but some of your posts came across to me as quite hot headed and confrontational, much like I can be (and was guilty of) and that sort of set me off. This is not an excuse and I do not blame you for this. It is my fault that I let your posts get to me. As stated, I simply disagree with one action of H? and I should not let one action affect me so much. It is ridiculous to let this come between our two alliances when we mostly share the same goals. I do not come to you with this because I'm afraid of retaliation, but because damaged relations could hurt any chances of FDU and H? working together and that could hurt new players that it is my goal to help. I do not expect things to change and suddenly be fixed, but I want you to know I consider this to be merely a disagreement among friends, though I was not always friendly and that's what I apologize for. I still disagree with this action by H? and I would even have helped CranK defend his city if I had the military cabability to do so, but I'd never attack H? or do anything that I thought was counterproductive to making Illyriad a fun game for everyone. I felt it important that you know where I stand so that maybe in the future we can work together when neccessary and have a more productive discussion when we disagree.

Not sure about the timing but he probably never got my reply agreeing with everything he said....

I will miss the presence Shrapnel had in this game. Anyone that takes on the role of teaching new players in any game is a player that is hard to find. These players are what make games better and allow newer players to enjoy the game faster and longer. Just like he was well respected in this game, I am sure his accomplishments in life far exceed anything nice he has done here. A person like Shrapnel is hard to find due to his compassion and spirit that made everyone around him happier. However, I have not had the pleasure to know him personally, I am well aware of the gentlemen he was in game and in life. My prayers are with his wife and children.
RIP Shrapnel - May your alliance live on and I hope someone will take on his role to continue his vision he sought after in this game. FDU should continue in honor of him. I feel FDU should be able to pick any land in game to make their home with the new free move coming up. Perhaps once they are settled in the new land, the GMs can rename the area Shrapnel.

Extremely saddening to hear of God's latest capture. Shrapnel created a role for himself within Illyriad and filled it admirably. He was a level headed individual who was always a pleasure to chat with and never backed out of putting forward thought-provoking ideas and challenging the status-quo.
May his eternal soul R.I.P forever.

It is with great sadness that I face the truth. The truth that Shrapnel has joined countless others at the Undying Realms,as I call it.But he shall not be forgotten, for his deeds shall continue in our minds and hearts.I was no one in this game and he took me into his alliance and told me all about this game.Yes,I did upset him sometimes.Yes,I did bothered him with limitless questions.Yet he always had the time to answer them without any kind of objection. The newbies will suffer much with his loss for he could teach them many things.I hope every FDU member wll let me say this, but we will continue Shrap's work of guidance, btu it shall no longer be FDU.It shall be,at least the previsory name, Shrapnel's Guild. It shall be so to remind us all of his great work.
My condolences go to his family and friends and also to every Illyriad player that knew Shrapnel, because we just lost a great Man and above that a Great Friend.
Ill have a beer in your memory, sir.

I suggest moving his cities to the center of a small mountain range, making them into unassailable Monuments and Naming the range into "Shrapnel's Cairn" or something like that. Nothing less would do.

Maybe modeled after the Free Defense Union.

I completely agree and support a remembrance to him in the game.. a faction or a region named after him would be a great idea.

Those who knew him best are going to miss him the most. Shrapnel the Trader made an everlasting impression on Illyriad.
Shrapnel the Trader has now indisputably become Shrapnel the Legend. In my book no one will ever take that title from him.
I support Smoky's proposal.

I recall his young children, just recently, typing gibberish in global
chat because they wanted to talk to us, and Strategos jokingly warning
about spamming global, then asking if they understood the value of
buying prestige.
This was a big shock to me and it is a big loss to the Illyriad community.
I would like to also second the idea of an ingame tribute to Shrapnel. I know it's a lot to ask, but i think it would be good to have something that could involve player interaction. Perhaps a quest to place our names on a monument with a note of farewell. Or something more elaborate - a way to contribute to helping new players advance by donations.

Only had the pleasure of talking to Shrapnel a few times. Found him to be a reasonable, and also a very levelheaded man.
When you play a game like this, it's easy to admire people who are at the top of the rankings, and it's also easy to dislike those who play the game in a way you do not agree with.
But time and time again, in each game i play, i keep getting confronted with the fact that there is someone behind that "false identity" that each one of us creates in a game.
I could be in a very happy state of mind, only to find out that someone who I am "friends/allied" with, and keep making jokings with over in-game email, is actually having one hell of a time in real life.
You never see that. It's just a game, so how could you know?
So then I read something like this, I read Shrapnels obituary, and I can't help but think that it's a shame I couldn't have gotten to know him better.
It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love for your dream for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon... I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain mine or your own without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy mine or your own if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful to be realistic to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day. And if you can source your own life from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure yours and mine and still stand at the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "Yes."
It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn't interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

In just under a month from now will be the anniversary of the passing of one the communities best respected players. When I first started playing Illyiad I joined FDU which Shrap had set set up as the first training alliance. I didn't have as closer contact as some of the players who remain from those days but I did learn awful lot from him. For those who want write the history of Illyriad and include the many community initiatives that we take for granted today you need look no further than the posts of this guy.
For those newbes who want establish a benchmark on how the game of Illyriad should played, read up on Sharpnel. His legacy is still there for us all to learn from.
May the community honour the memory of the gamer and the family man we knew as Shrap on 8 October
