The DEVS are pleased to announce the relaunch of the Eaglesbrood Faction. This is the first major update to Faction content since https://forum.illyriad.co.uk/update-14oct10-faction-info_topic1171_post8939.html?KW=Faction#8939" rel="nofollow - , https://forum.illyriad.co.uk/update-06dec10-faction-content_topic1334_post11305.html?KW=Faction#11305" rel="nofollow - , and https://forum.illyriad.co.uk/03-july-11-faction-hubs-prestige-options_topic2115_post22574.html?KW=Faction#22574" rel="nofollow - .
This relaunch includes:
Completely rewritten profile and lore. Four new NPC units with custom art and stats. Four new, mysterious eyrie spawn points with custom art. Additional relationships with other Factions vis a vis new inter-factional standings (IFS). A revamp of the ‘Brood’s Default Racial Standings (DRS). A new “Mythical” race classification (replacing “Monstrous” for the previous Eaglesbrood Faction).
The Lore
The new profile and lore for the Eaglesbrood replaces the previous version, which spoke of the Giant Eagles as mythical, monstrous specters that had long passed into legend, with the human “Eagle Hunter” being the only NPC unit associated with the Faction.
The remake of the lore is based on a document from Illyriad’s mythos, entitled, “Word of Li Lon Go, Third Adept of the House of the Tranquil Waters.” This document presents a creation story that references the Eagles:
In the beginning there was a time of peace. The Divine Land of the Five Ranges was governed by many Daimyo who respected and feared the Gods and dared not wage war upon each other. The Gods, although happy to be worshipped, felt that there lacked a cohesion to the races of men and believed they could be much greater than they were. Mankind so far was a disappointment.
A great debate arose between the six Gods of the Upper Circle on what to do about it. Zao Kesh, the god of Wind and Horses, argued that the mountains were irrelevant and the men of the plains should rule. Ten Kulch, the God of the Black Bile, argued that all man should only worship him in his vile ceremonies. The reclusive Taolin Vu, God of the Heights and Eagles did not participate much in the dialogue, only to add that all the mud-crawlers as he deemed the valley people, should respect their natural superiors, the mountain dwellers. Tamarinda Laka, the Goddess of Knowledge and Peace, tried her best to keep the argument civil, but secretly instructed her devotees to prepare distant mountain strongholds to preserve the ancient knowledge, should the Gods not come to any agreement and bloodshed ensue. Wen Babo, the God of Music, Archers, and Thieves, wanted gaiety and art spread throughout the lands.
Since the lore directly associates Taolin Vu with both mountains and eagles, we used this as a cue to remake the Faction’s lore, and to tie in the Kanchalka people:
Ultimately, however, the argument was decided by the great Lao Te Shin, First amongst the Gods. He avowed that each God may have their own area and Race of men to follow them. To Zao Kesh, he gave the Plains of Keshalia and the Horse Nation of Tipu Khan. To Taolin Vu, he allocated the mighty Mountains of Taomist and the mountain men of Kanchalka. He banished Ten Kulch to perform his bloody rites in his desert fastness of Kajadum, far to the South and named his followers the Hashashin. Tamarinda Laka did not wait to be given a land or people. She retreated to the distant mountains of Tamarin, far to the North, with her warrior monks, the Tien Zao, to the fastnesses they had prepared in advance. For himself, Lao Te Shin kept the most fertile valleys of Laoshin, the breadbasket of the world, upon which to build his great cities. These cities were to be known as the Forbidden Empire. He curtly told Wen Babo that he deserved no land, but could be worshipped in taverns and other houses of ill repute.
We feel that this mythos strongly suggests a connection with Taolin Vu, the Giant Eagles, and the Kanchalka, making it relatively easy to reforge their lore without having to make something brand-new that might seem anachronistic or out-of-place.
IFS and DRS Standings
The new and edited inter-factional standings (IFS) were also inspired in part based on this source material. For example, Lao Te Shin’s banishment of Ten Kulch was the impetus for a negative rating with the Hashashin; the association with the Kanchalka gives them a very positive ranking, etc. Some of the IFS stats are inspired by the new DRS stats as well.
We have reworked the Default Racial Standings to be less extreme than previously, when they were treated as “Monstrous.” We’ve done this so that players of all races will have an opportunity to interact with the Eagles, with some having a slight advantage over others.
“Mythical” Race Classification
The Giant Eagles were originally classified as part of the “Monstrous” race. With the rewriting of the lore, we saw an opportunity to create a new “Mythical” race. The Eagles will be categorized as such, and this new Mythical classification offers us a new avenue for future content updates and launches for Factions. The Eagles are not mere animals, nor are they monsters. They are sentient, spiritualized beings that are closely associated with the gods characterized in Li Lon Go’s ancient text.
Eyrie Locations
Some Factions have spawn points instead of trade hubs. We decided to make the Giant Eagles’ eyries something new and different from both trade hubs and spawn points. You will notice that they have identifiable locations on the map, and there are custom icons for each of them.
Unlike trade hubs, which appear on the Strategic Map and Faction profile pages, the positions of the eyries are not documented within the game; players will need to search for them. Clues to their geographic locations can be found in the mythos and new Faction profile.
While the Giant Eagles are an Elgean Faction, we did give them a dual presence in both Elgea and the Broken Lands, so that players in the BL might have an opportunity to interact with them.
New NPC Units
We are excited to debut 4 new Giant Eagle NPC units associated with the Faction. The original lore for Eaglesbrood only hinted at their existence, and the associated unit, the “Eagle Hunter,” simply hunted the Eagles (or hunted after their legend). We felt it was important for the Eaglesbrood to be composed of actual Eagles rather than those who hunt them.
The unit stats can be found on the Faction profile page by clicking the units’ thumbnail images, as well as referenced here:
Name | Move Speed | Carrying Capacity | Attack | Spear Defense | Sword Defense | Bow Defense | Cavalry Defense | Type | Scout Eagle | 67 | 150 | 800 | 1100 | 1080 | 950 | 1060 | Mythical | Guardian Eagle | 65 | 200 | 1050 | 1150 | 1250 | 1080 | 1170 | Mythical | Warrior Eagle | 73 | 250 | 1660 | 1780 | 1700 | 1820 | 1730 | Mythical | Hunter Eagle | 75 | 280 | 1580 | 870 | 840 | 810 | 880 | Mythical |
| | | | | | | |
|
The new eagle units are incredibly powerful. We used the Undead Dragons as a baseline for their attack and defense stats, generally giving the Giant Eagles about a third of the Undead Dragons’ power. However, we gave the Eagles faster speed and carry capacity compared to their undead, monstrous counterparts. How speed and carrying capacity will factor into players’ experiences with the game will be further implemented wih Faction AI.
All of the Eagle units are marked as cavalry units, owing to their speed and weakness to the bow.
You will also see the original Eagle Hunter unit reappropriated to the https://elgea.illyriad.co.uk/#/Alliance/Faction/27" rel="nofollow - as a “Kanchalka Eagle Rider.” A new description also accompanies this unit as well as tweaks to their unit stats. More to come on the purpose of this unit in future updates.
Pre-Faction AI Behaviors
While the full Faction AI behavioral engine is not yet live, all NPC Factions’ behaviors are automated via the game's fully customizable behavioral engine, uniquely set for every Faction. You will see the Eaglesbrood behave similarly to other NPC Factions, but with its own unique characteristics. Once Faction AI launches, the Giant Eagles’ behaviors will be governed by that new system in a similar manner to the other Factions, with behaviors being dictated by players’ and alliances’ rankings with them. You can review the new Eaglesbrood Faction content on their https://elgea.illyriad.co.uk/#/Alliance/Faction/15" rel="nofollow - . We hope you enjoy the new Faction content!
Edit: added the rationale for using cavalry as the unit type for the Eagles.

Hi Bazoon. Yes, we have future plans for further releases around Eaglesbrood, for sure.
In the meantime, you'll have to fight them with non-mythical weapons . . . if you dare.

There doesn't seem to be a unit type attached to them atm, at least not from the Faction page. I'll have a scout report tomorrow so maybe that'll be different

You might need to do a browser refresh (Ctrl+F5 on windows) to get them to show and/or a login or logout.
But these should be there:

Thanks, Remy -- you all are so quick at finding these squares!
True about the unit types not populating on the front end. They are definitely in the back end of the system; just need to get them to show on the front. We're looking into it.

Sounds like an interesting development and the teaser of Faction AI even more so. Are there other factions that need building out? For instance, I searched Farra island extensively over a period of time and have never seen a Harpy, and inquiries to many town holders on Farra Island revealed that no one has seen Harpies. Perhaps an opportunity there. Thanks for keeping the game fun

Definitely, Asvenger. There are additional Faction enhancements being designed and slated for full development. The plan is to weave these updates and releases throughout the Faction AI rollout, which will probably take a full year or more to get completely out. But more is definitely coming.

Your expedition reaches the perilous heights of Talaf Anon.
Perched high atop the rugged peaks of Taomist, Talaf Anon serves as the majestic capital eyrie of the giant eagles. These sentient and mystical creatures, forged by the elemental forces of Taolin Vu and revered for their wisdom and strength, have made this remote and nigh-inaccessible sanctuary their home. The eyrie, a complex network of expansive nests and broad, open terraces amid rocky outcrops, overlooks the vast, mist-veiled valleys and Zenorran plains to the south, where Taomist gives way to the northern borders of Mal Motsha. Shrouded in mystery, Talaf Anon is a place of awe and reverence, its grandeur accentuated by the towering cliffs and sweeping views of the region's inexplicable elevation. The Giant Eagles, known for their ancient lore and guardianship of the land, watch over Illyria from this exalted vantage point, embodying the spirit and freedom of the skies.
After being granted wordless permission to take a few steps onto Talaf Anon's central courtyard, two guardian eagles land in front of you, barring your way forward. The stoic gaze of the eagles speaks volumes – you will not be permitted to go further, and gazing on the mythical homeland of the giant eagles is reward enough for your eyes. Any prospect of trade with the eagles appears impossible, as your portly trader peers regrettably down the chasmic stair that took days to climb. No aid is offered to transport you from the mountaintop, so your party begins the slow and slippery descent through the deadly crags of Taomist's treacherous mountains toward home.

Your expedition reaches the frigid heights of Forod Anon.
For days, your troop of scouts, traders, and diplomats grasped with cold, raw hands up the blustery mountain stair in south central Ursor in hopes of reaching the giant eagles' rumored outpost in the north – a mythical resting place for scout eagles ranging from their capital eyrie of Talaf Anon in Taomist who wish to rest and take sustenance before patrolling the farther-flung northern reaches of Elgea.
Forod Anon lacks the purported grandeur of the eagles' vaunted capital. Constructed from great beams from the forests below and a myriad of softer organic materials matted down into a firm yet comfortable surface, the eyrie approximates the construction of smaller birds' nests, with the exception of its size: the shelf of Forod Anon extends nearly 100 feet in length along a smooth, near-vertical wall of the lonely peak it is built upon, with a width of 40 feet.
At the time of your arrival, no eagles were present on the shelf, and nothing else could be seen, save for the skull of what appeared to be a dragon in one corner of the shelf, the likes of which have not been seen in Elgea for ages.
The captain of your expedition would tarry no longer, for fear that eagles returning to their eyrie might not take well to uninvited guests. At the protest of the troop's naturalist who sought a longer session with the mythical artifact, your expedition makes their way home.

Your expedition reaches the heights of Pand Pinnath.
Perched atop a loney mountain, far above the rainy, humid mists of Puchuallpa's sweltering jungles, the eyrie of Pand Pinnath is a simple yet commanding shelf overlooking the far stretches of the northern Broken Lands. While little is known of this place, it is likely that the eagles established it in or around 1037 when the Broken Lands appeared south of the Bitter Sea, giving them a talonhold of the new continent.
As you gain your footing on the shelf and gaze out over the sea, you contemplate the pondrous distance from the Giant Eagles' eyries in the northeast of Elgea and the incredible endurance it would take to reach this northernmost position in the Broken Lands. Turning around, the Broken Lands open up below you into a swath of green and blue and brown and purple. Indeed, Pand Pinnath must provide the eagles extended range to scout and patrol into these new lands.
Buttoning your packs for the journey home, a patrol of eagles swiftly lands on the shelf.
“May the winds of Taolin Vu bless you,” says the eagles' Captain as he steps forward. “Few of your kind have made their way to this place, and while we appreciate your bravery and steadfastness in traversing the jungles and mountain, you may not tarry here. This is a place of rest and reconnaissance for the eagles. Whilst we understand that the way back must weigh wearily on your hearts and legs, we must bid you leave this place.”
After the exchange of polite valedictions, your expedition begins its journey home.

Your expedition reaches the heights of Pand Anon.
While lacking the grandiosity of design found in the giant eagles' capital eyrie of Forod Anon, Pand Anon matches the capital in size. The expansive shelf benefits from being constructed on top of a mostly flat mountain, the site of which features an abandoned mineshaft. To the mountain's southeast is the valley of Arnongwethwe, as named by the eagles themselves.
Unlike the other eyries of the eagles, Pand Anon features a structure that is designed to accommodate people. Overlooking the valley at the precipice of the shelf stands a stately domicile with 8 large windows across its front- and back-facing sides. While the building appears appropriately sized to accommodate human, elf, dwarf, and orc alike, its design is decidedly human in style, with aesthetics that evoke the nearby architecture of the Council of Illyria's legendary city of Tundale.
Outside this residence, a magnificently tended garden with intricate hedgerows, bubbling fountains, and several large benches sit across from a perch hewn out of the mountain's living stone that accommodates the gripping talons of the giant eagles. As you step a few paces onto the shelf and regain your footing, you see a number of well-dressed humans conversing quietly in the distance with a grand eagle. While nothing is written of this place, how it came to feature living accommodations for people, and whether the city of Tundale played a role in its construction, it appears that the Eaglesbrood uses Pand Anon as its embassy and consulate for consulting with the Council of Illyria (and perhaps other Elgean Factions).
A guardian eagle spots you from the other end of the shelf and with two or three beats of its wings, takes flight across the platform and lands between your group and the embassy.
“May the winds of Taolin Vu bless you,” the eagle says in greeting. You bow as graciously as possible as any semblance of response escapes you in the presence of this mythical being. “I am sorry, but though you have traveled long and the road has doubtless been difficult, you may not tarry here. The relations that we conduct with those of your kind in this place are limited, and we are not at liberty right now to host you. However, there may come a time that we will bid you to return to this place so that we may understand your intentions more clearly.”
After some courteous valedictions, you and your expedition begin the long trek home.
