To repeat, is plains around plains a better town for humans who are making cavalry?

I know the common wisdom is to build a city on mountain around plains. Distant cavs will have an easier time coming. But for a human who is mostly making cavalry, isn't it the best idea to be on and around plains? And gear like battlebred is quite cheap to make.

You have cavalry. Just dodge and get the lost resources from somewhere else.

I am not amused.

Cavalry is a poor choice to defend against direct attacks, even when equipped.

Dodging isn't always an option. They can launch direct siege attacks. I'd have to lose my spot, if I don't have a caravan going somewhere else (or researching etc) in the first place.

But somewhere else you advised that everyone needs a standby army. Of about -200kph (before troop cost reduction). Examples included kobolds, stalwarts and knights. What will my knight standby help for if I'm just looking to defend?

If someone laid a direct siege on you. Your cavalry will be used to break that siege , hence they'll defend your city that way.

Sometimes the best defense is a strong offense ;)

I know. But this is why I'm doubting that I should locate my town on a mountain. Cavalry on a mountain is like sticking a "kill me" sign on your back.

The main city damage scenario is a siege adjacent to your city. Knights would be excellent for breaking such sieges.

For defending a direct attack, you would equip the typical defenders of bows and spears, depending on what was attacking. You would send your knights out temporarily to avoid the attack, and reinforce with defensive troops from your other cities. But you don't defend with cavalry. It's an inefficient defender, even when equipped.

Putting the town itself on a mountain is fine - as long as you're OK with however many food plots it has.  Having a mountain adjacent to your town is the issue.
