Hi all,

As requested, here's the Illyriad World Map.

Please note the following:

  • This is a full size map, where one pixel = one square, therefore it is a fairly large size (2001x2001 pixels in total)

  • It shows, in broad-brush terms, the main topographical features of the continent

  • It is pretty accurate in most all respects, but we do occasionally edit parts the world - and so your "master" copy of the map should be the one ingame. This is useful for reference.

  • This map has not yet had biomes applied to it, so expect a later version to appear that contains other major features such as Desert, Polar Ice, Jungle and so on

TO VIEW THE COMPLETE MAP, RIGHT CLICK ON THE IMAGE BELOW AND CHOOSE "VIEW IMAGE" or "OPEN IMAGE IN NEW WINDOW" (the exact option will depend on your web browser).

Best wishes,

GM Stormcrow

So, there'll be at least two more versions - one with biomes and one with factions / regions on it.

In the fullness of time (with UI v2) this map will be ingame, and you will be able to apply not only pre-defined overlays over it (such as Factions or Regions) but you will also be able to see (eg) the location of your alliance members.

Oh, and - because I've been asked this a few times already...

The slightly terrifying "demonic otherworldly lurker reaching out towards you with a tail (or whip in his right hand)" that can be seen with the skull-like face just above the -200|-200 marker was entirely random from the fractal algorithm...

Freaky, huh?!

I'm noticing that the real map and the image are a bit off.  E.g. the world map at -100|50 shows a river meeting a lake with light and dense forest surrounding the mouth of the river.

In the real map there is no forest in that area (nor cities to prevent there being forest there).

500, -100 looks like a ghost clown... (Gotta be zoomed in to see the beady eyes...)

400,-400 looks like an upside down face..

Hi KP,

Yes, there are some differences, but they'll be fairly minor.

As mentioned, the ingame map is definitely the primary source, and this should largely be used for reference - though we are working on a way of getting it to "auto" update from the source data.  Or rather, we have a way already of doing this - although it's slightly complicated by the "reseeding" we've done of many zones (plus the preservation of player/sov squares) - but this isn't insurmountable.

Best,

SC

I don't like the fact that there are so few oceans, and ONLY on the southern edge of the map.

But except for that, Awesome update, SC.

If rather than just changing the edges of the map to be oceans you could potentially expand adding ocean squares, then loop the map. It could even be potentially made so that islands become important regions when going from the top of the map to the bottom. Perhaps introduce supplies, or a need for repairs etc. In all though very useful.
I'd still like to hear if there's any plans to entice elves into forested regions, also appart from the extra iron dwarves need an incentive to stay in the mountains rather then move to the forests.

I thought that the world was going to be like a continent, with water on all sides... instead i only see an ocean on one side. why?

Cool map but it begs the question, what's west, north, and east of us?

North will go into endless Polar Ice.
South will go into endless Ocean.
East and West will go into Terra Incognita (blackness).

East and West allow us to expand the world, if we need to - and may well get coastlines and ocean.

South allows us expansion into a Southern Hemisphere - and perhaps even new continents...

But for the moment this is what there is.

Best,

SC

Don't believe the post above. I know what is west, north east and south.

If there were oceans around the edges it would end the illusion that the world would be incomplete, but rather the map of the entire world and the E-W oceans are one ocean.

Just a suggestion

And there may well be in the fullness of time. But not now Smile

SC you spoke before about there being trade and war in the oceans which will be great and add levels to the game - but will their be anything in the ice then? Or on the the tundra's and wastes?

I accept that we'll always be workin on trade route based trade - makes sense and adds intensity :)

But i cant imagine that handicapping or benefits those in the south so massively would be fair.

Even if its just something simple like those who live in the tundra/ice can travel easily across it, but foreign forces unused to the wealther suffer losses to natural or travel with restrictions :)

But hey - maybe you've already thought of this? :)

Im just curious where we of the north stand? :)

good point.Much of the questions and answers have naturally been directed towards the south, where the ocean is.I understand biomes havent been introduced yet,but when they do I cant imagine many players moving to the north, and the ones that are there(myself included) may not find it to their liking.

Will there be any good reasons for staying in the North,or will Illyriad players slowly migrate to the South?

There will be balanced (but different) benefits to being in the North vs being in the South.

A lot of excellent ideas have come from you goodly players recently - and many of these will see production.

Best,

SC

Can we start naming the different part of the map?

Think we should wait with naming, until we know, which biomes will be set there

I'm sure the Devs are looking forward to filtering out 100s if not thousands of names.
More then half of em being blatantly from other media and another good chunk being lulz submissions.
