Being in an alliance can have substantial advantages, not least of them the ability to engage in diplomatic relationships. One relationship is a confederation, which allows a player to Tenaril or Exodus within 10 squares of another player. A small independent player might want to create an alliance solely for this purpose. While the player might have other options (such as negotiating to join another alliance), this might be the most straightforward way of accomplishing some goals.
Preventing a player from doing this sort of thing until they have 5 cities, as some have proposed, seems a bit draconian.

Starting an alliance is a bit like starting a business: i f you go into it with no planning, no cash, and no time to spend on it, it is likely to fail.
So my take on this question is this: do we want to insulate unprepared players from the prospect of likely failure, while not denying them the chance to succeed? Either of these outcomes can provide an opportunity for fun along the way.

Your suggestion does not address the root cause, only a symptom.
Ask why it happens 5 times (5 Why's).

I think this is actually an invalid discussion I have started 3 alliances now of which 2 are still around My first (The time of the elves) i made when i had only 300 pop! i never begged neither did my members except through IGM with friends
my 3rd alliance (The lands of Araluan) which i started with about 2k pop and now i have almost 14k pop in no time so personally i think you should give people a chance
starting an alliance is the best thing i have ever done and i think it is an honor! Spp and now OD (OrcDruid)

Another thought.. apart from population requirement, maybe a signature system could be used. Let's say xxx person wants to found a new alliance.. Ok Go to the community and ask for 5 signatures. If 5 ppl sign it, voila, u are good to go.

After spending some time lately on GC.. i totally agree with the initial post. In fact, i think 10k is a too small number.. Make it 50k at least. So that one week nabs (attention, nothing agaisnt nabs, i still consider myself to be a nab sometimes) can't just go and found an alliance. 50k pop players should have enough time on Illy so they understand the community and gameplay and so can help their own members.

exceptions noted. there are alliances which are specifically not feeder alliances for larger sisters, with enforced graduation and a mission to develop players without an agenda on where they go. but there are many that exploit the moniker to guarantee safety to certain of their members and recruit by association.

yes that's it exactly.

@LL I'm not sure if that was aimed at me or not... I wasn't implying that you were forcing a group of players to join T?. You guys in T? have always been a fine group. What I was saying, is that if we make the requirements for founding new alliances more burdensome than they are, then this would essentially be the end result. Groups of friends coming into the game would be forced to game within another group (training or otherwise) in order to game together because we have taken the option of founding their own alliance away. I'm sorry if my post wasn't clear. Generally speaking, I think that it is also worth considering that for every one group we see doing this in GC there are at least five that are making it just fine without outside help. - M.

we have a new area called broken being open, i think its important not to change anything about requirements to start alliances because of this. we all have to remember that current game play that exists here most likely will be different there. about our current play area, the newbie plays a totally different game than the more established player. restricting them to new rules and regulations than what we had at that stage will have unforeseen consequences that might be opposite than what was intended. remember there is a tight knit group of gamers out there that chat with each other of all games being offered. we want to attract these people to come play here, not discourage them.
