+1 Epidemic, Angrim, LL

I enjoy giving res to newbies in GC. That's not my issue and I regularly ask for newbies to wave for pressies, including sending to newbies in alliances. The top of my profile is dedicated to newbies under 300 pop without an alliance, inviting them to mail for extra res to get them started.

I don't advocate training alliances above any other alliances. I believe some 'training alliances' don't really live up to my expectations of the description too. That is a separate discussion.

Begging is an entirely separate issue too. There are many reasons why it is not advisable to start an alliance at 0-5k population, not just lack of resources to feed your players. For example, they do not understand the general social conventions - such as the 10 square rule, not harvesting on sov, not raiding active newbies etc. I accept that new players could be self sufficient and band together.. but I'm not sure how having them wait a month to get settled in puts them at any disadvantage.

Having them all thieved/sieged for settling 1 square away from other players and attacking actives certainly will put them at a disadvantage.. and I have general issues with players who think they are capable of leading without any game knowledge. These people tend to make atrocious leaders and are often selfish, glory hunters who drag down those misguided souls who join them.

Interesting that someone takes the fact that my mention of 1 group of players joining T? is someone forcing groups into training alliances.  No one forces anyone in this game to join any alliance.  The join or die isn't thought of well here in Illy.  I was only using them as an example.  Turn it into any kind of evil you want to make it.  I know the true  meaning of what was said.

I can see where people can be put off of Training alliances.  The number of them seem to be growing by leaps and bounds.  Now every large alliance wants their own training alliance.  I pride myself in T? being one that stays true to its beginning and continues to have players graduate to any alliance they wish to go to. (Yes, we have to MAKE some graduate even when they want to stay, if my officer positions are full.)

I just think that new players starting an alliance without forethought into what it requires on their part is going to make reality even harder when they are turned down for help in GC.  I don't like to see players suffer like that, but I also know I can't feed every alliance started by a new player that doesn't realize the repercussions of their actions. No one is asking me to, this I know.  Just hard for me to watch players struggle.  Just how I am.

i don't see that "begging in gc" and a population limit to found an alliance have anything to do with one another.  where i have looked into it, newbs have not pooled small contributions to pay for their charters...they have found specific vets who, for glory or affection, have given them the 500k required.  in a few cases, those vets have continued to guide the new alliance in an advisory capacity, all to the good.

that said, to argue that a population requirement is an unfair burden on new players is to argue against the 500k gold requirement as well.  it seems clear that the devs, if not the community, believes that there should be some minimum time in the game before a player founds an alliance; a minimum population limit serves that purpose better than a price in gold, since population cannot be given away as easily.  i would expect, given the situation above, that vets might resort to founding alliances on behalf of newbs, but at least then their fingerprints would be evident on the deed.

exceptions noted.  there are alliances which are specifically not feeder alliances for larger sisters, with enforced graduation and a mission to develop players without an agenda on where they go.  but there are many that exploit the moniker to guarantee safety to certain of their members and recruit by association.

there is more harm in this than good. If a group of people come here, want to game together, we shouldn't force them to game inside another group to do that. Let them form an alliance and game together. The Illy community shouldn't be trying to force 'training alliances'* on anyone. This would be a huge turn off to new players / player groups imho.

Also, to address the concern more directly, if you think someone is asking for too much in GC, then don't send. Many of us find that helping someone with resources is a nice way to meet new people and make new friends in game. That includes helping people in other alliances. Sometimes I want to be the friendly guy who welcomes people to the game with gift packages. Others do too.

The game provides a built in function for you to screen these requests out of your chat - make use of the ignore button and you won't see any requests. In contrast, the game does not provide me with any function to filter in these requests. This would hurt my ability (and others as well) of meeting new people and new groups. - M.

(*like many I find 'training' alliances just propaganda hogwash in general - every alliance trains and near every training alliances acts like a normal alliance in the end - they just try to claim special privilege because of the label).

EDIT: Also note that almost every good review of Illyriad mentions the helpfulness of the Illy community toward new players. Don't damage that by putting superficial restriction on it or new players that join. Leave those of us who want to continue that helpfulness free to continue it with whoever we want. No restrictions.

Even if a pop. requirement was implemented someone will always find a way around it.
In war there are rules, in politics however, there are no rules.

Back to the topic though,

I would approve of a population requirement to found an alliance and since we are on this subject I would approve of the gold cost to be raised as well.

Even as a new player I never begged for res in GC, and while in a training alliance I quickly stopped asking, and asked its members NOT to send me res. Yes it slowed down my development, but I've taken pride in being self-sufficient and I've also had to learn a lot more about the game. I'm not only amazed by larger players begging (and getting) res from GC, I'm also flabbergasted by the number of players in GC with 3 or more towns who still don't know the basics about harvesting, crafting or trade.

I too have been called a spoilsport by suggesting in GC that the "welfare wagons" stop after a fairly short period for new players. If alliances want to hand out res to their new players, that's their own business. But the GC community isn't encouraging learning by constantly feeding beggars.

The begging occurs all the time in Global Chat, I have commented on it to be called a bully, a killjoy and a troll. I have encouraged self sufficiency while others send 20,000 of each resource to a newbie with one city that for some reason best known to himself is speed rushing to a warehouse,  I have seen players with three cities beg and receive resources.

The community seems content to consistently ship out resources to those that do not wish to become self sufficient.

I think a high population requirement to create and/or lead an alliance is ideal and would cut down on bad leadership and good players leaving because of their early experiences in game.

I, and quite a few other players, regularly ask if any new players need res or help. It's a good idea to help truly new players and I will keep doing that.

Whenever I see a player, in an alliance, ask for res I tell them to ask their alliance. When I see a player with several towns ask for res I tell them to buy from the market.

GC has brought alot of this behaviour on itself.  If ppl who regularly use GC don't like new players using it too ask for res, simple don't offer it in the first place.  Secondly I see no problem with ppl using GC to issue invites for their alliance, I only use GC for this purpose, and I will continue too use it in this way.  I really cannot see the problem with new players forming alliances.
