Hi all,

I would like to propose that the Elven Thoroughbred be revised. For those who do not know, the cost of building them is 20 gold, 1 horse and 5 herbs and the bonuses are as follows: +15% Move Speed, -20% for Humans, -20% for Dwarves, -20% for Orcs. As it stands, the only reason I can think of that an elf would choose it over a regular Riding Horse (cost: 10 gold, 1 horse, 1 mineral, 1 hide, 5 herbs; bonus: +25% Move Speed, can be used by non cavalry units) is that it does not require a mineral and a hide to build; it is a poor man's Riding Horse. I am not even sure if non-cavalry units can use them so the Riding Horse just seems better in every way.

All the other race specific mounts have some other bonuses that set them apart: orcs have a carry and hill bonus, dwarves have a hill and mountain bonus, humans have large defence bonuses with some biome penalties to balance it out. It just doesn't seem that the Elven Thoroughbred is comparable when the basic Riding Horse that everyone gets seems to be better in every way.

Some of you may argue that elves are overpowered to begin with and I don't want this to spiral into that sort of argument, which has come up in a lot of the other crafting threads. All I am proposing is that the Elven Thoroughbred be revised to give it a unique bonus that sets it apart from the other mounts like the other races have, to give it even a niche use as right now the Riding Horse seems better to go with if you want speed and there are no other real bonuses comparable to those of other races and therefore little reason to use it.

Riding Horses are for non-cavalry, non-siege units.

Draught Horses are for siege units only.

The other horses (such as the Elven Thoroughbred) are for cavalry units.

So cavalry cannot "equip" Riding Horses, so it's not an either/or proposition, they serve different roles.   The elf cavalry horse ensures that they continue to be the fastest available military unit in the game and extends that margin.

only non cav. so you see why you need that horse to make your already fast and silly glass cannon cavalry faster.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I didn't understand that riding horses could not be equipped to cavalry and it just seemed redundant. I thought it could be equipped to any non-siege unit. Now I can see the use. Consider my request withdrawn.

I am a little confused.

Crafted horses, how do you actually earn them AND what do you do with them if earn them in cities without a horse trainer?

You earn them through discovery

If you discover them in cities without a horse trainer, then if you ever decide to build a horse trainer you can make them.

The discovery horses depend on the race, e.g., battle mule for dwarves.  You get the discovery after 20 crafting researches.  All other crafted horses are unlocked by normal crafting research:  Draught, nimble, steady, ... horse.

To actually get crafted horses you need (1) the corresponding research or discovery, (2) normal horses for training, (3) a horse trainer; higher level => faster training, (4) paddock level 1; higher level => faster training, (5) other stuff in the recipe, herbs, minerals, whatever.   Plan B, buy crafted horses at a hub.
