Still not clear what the '[Each category can contribute a maximum of 1/8 to overall score]' actually means. Does this mean that the max any can contribute is 1/8 the final score(in which case the final score is always 8x the lowest score...which seems odd), or does it meant that the score in each is modified by some factor, <= 12.5%, before being added to the final score. If so, what is that factor, where does it come from? Is it particular for each type? Like trade contributes a smaller percentage than pop, or the like?
Don't really understand how this all works. :p

Currently it appears that 3 categories(pop, tech, quest) each make up about a third of my score, with the others not even really counting.

This was just a failed idea of my own, Shaharet. Ignore it. Only ThunderCat knows how Ranking works.

Hi Noki/Shaha,
I think the individual categories are scaled down evenly to the same level to calculate your overall score. Thus, if your score is high in a category where the average score is less, its contribution will be higher.
For example, The highest score in population category is nearly 217,000. If you have a population of 20,000, it will add significantly to your overall rank.
The highest score in Trade category is nearly 35,000,000,000. If you have a trade score of 20,000, its contribution to your overall rank will be miniscule.
Your "Rank" in individual categories does not affect your overall rank. Your "Score" in individual categories affect your overall rank. The average(or maximum) score of other players in individual categories affect your overall rank. The contribution from Population and Technology will always be higher because these two cannot exceed beyond a limit. The categories like "attack" and "trade" can go on to very high values, hence its contribution to your overall score will be less.
Ah I think that was just as enlightening as ThunderCat's random number generator!

If that's true, the couple guys who broke the trade system for 35B are messing it up for everyone else. :(

I think that the value of population is actually -multiplied-. Because I have a score of 1350 in that, and it's apparently half my total(according to ye old pie chart), and I have a 2m total score.

I can totally believe I'm tied for last in a bunch of categories, but then I don't know what goes into them. Like, what goes into trade? Is it just buying and selling on the market? I do a lot of harvesting with my caravans and sending/receiving supplies to other players but I think I'm still tied for last (3950)
What goes into diplomacy? I have about a hundred diplomatic units, and have gone on dozens of scouting and spying missions, but in quests and against other (inactive) players but I think I'm still tied for last (1980)
What goes into defense? I don't have a lot of units, but I do have a couple dozen, and I think I'm still tied for last (1331)
Thanks

Trade: You have to strade for goods on the market, the larger amounts you trade and the freqeuncy means higher score. Diplomacy: Send scouts, theives and other diplomatic units to large cities that are inactive or suspended, perhaps later if you get into a fight with someone you will see these rankings rise? Defense: Usualy when someone attacks your cities or your army camps, or if someone attacks your troops where they are stationed at a allies town.
Eh- Better not focus on the last two rankings just yet.

Diplomacy, like Defense, is a defensive ranking. Which kinda puzzles me, apparently you could be the smartest thief in the world and still be ranked the last in Diplomacy...

WRONG!
You only add the the diplomacy score if there are opposing forces at the destination. Therefore quests and mysteries will produce zero score, as will attempting to eg. thieve a city which has no thief units for defence. A city which does have them though will provide you with a diplo score. Same with any other like for like diplomat attack. As long as there is an opposing force there are points to be had.
