Topic: Player Ranking Posted: 02 Apr 2011 at 15:50 |
This is proof- even experienced players can be confuzzled in this game.
This time though, it's not gameplay. I'm just wondering- how do the GMs calculate Rankings? Because I can't really see it now, as I look at SF's rankings.
Population- 9th Trade- 14th Tech- 3rd Magic- 15th Attack- 8th Defence- 17th Diplomatic- 10th Quests- 10th
Overall- 3rd
I don't honestly see how they can work that out. So... help?

Math can be hard.
Overall rank is a combination of all categories, no category being more than 1/8 of total score.
SF is #3 overall because he is so highly ranked in all categories. Other players are higher ranked in specific areas, but are much lower ranked in other areas so their overall scores are lower than SF's.

I would've thought that it would be more sensible if you'd calculated the average? So...
9+14+3+15+8+17+10+10= 86, divided by 8= 10.75. And then you round it up.
I appreciate that this could get complicated, but I don't think it would be too hard.

It's Points, not Rank in each category, that are used to determine Overall Points which are then sorted to determine Overall Rank.

The problem with an "average" rank is that there are multiple combinations of 8 values that round to the same integer average. If 3 players average 3rd-place rank, who's really in 3rd place?
Actually, scratch the "integer" part. I could be 1st in the first four categories, and 2nd in the latter four. Another player could be 2nd in the first four categories and 1st in the latter four. We both average precisely 1.5. Who's ranked 1st overall?
And more commonly, 12 players could be ranked between 3rd and 4th. Where do they all go? The correct answer would have to be "no where near 3rd or 4th" because 7 more players would be ranked between 2nd and 3rd.

I didn't take it that far, but I suppose that they could prioritise particular sections.

Been wanting to ask this, here seems the place: How can my attack and defense rankings be just under 3K out of about 45K players when I have not got a single military installation or unit?

There are a lot of ties for last place in each category. :)
