I will close the company the day I cannot - in my own game's forums - take a moment to narcissistically admire the design that allows players to collaboratively amuse themselves within the rules of a sandbox game.

Unless it infracts the rules, it's absolutely not for us to "control" or even monitor.
Do you honestly think we spend any time whatsoever keeping up with who did what to whom? The internal politics of the game are a complete mystery to us - we have neither time nor inclination to look at metagame issues because we're working on core functionality and content.
When a metagame surfaces in the forum, as this one did, sure we're delighted with it.
What game company wouldn't be delighted when a band of disparate people from different alliances cook up some cute metagame disinformation strategy to attempt to make a self-confessed spy and metagamer look silly? We all think that's great!
If you can't see the difference between "GMs taking pleasure in seeing people play the game in an interesting way" and "ebil GMs taking sides" then I'm pretty sure that you might find that you will get more enjoyment out of playing a different game.

Moreover it is questionable whether an impartial observer should show admiration for the disingenuous nature of Metagaming as it can, if taken to far, have a detrimental affect on players and the games reputation. |
We've always been supportive of the metagame in Illyriad, have always said so, and many of the game mechanics are deliberately designed to support the metagame.
Much more damaging to Illyriad and the games' reputation has been our far-too-lenient attitude towards trolls and trolling in global chat and in the forums.
A very wise man (/me huggles Beau) at massively.com once wrote a tip guide for Independent Games companies writing games, where one of his Top 10 tips is as follows:
A very wise man wrote:
Take care of the trolls. I love Derek Smart, truly. My fandom has never had anything to do with any of his past history or reputation as a troublemaker back in the day. Frankly, I couldn't care less about how mad he made you 10 years ago. All I care about is that he is now showing that he knows how to help a game go forward and has more projects on the way. Also, he takes care of trolls. If they cause trouble on the Alganon forums, he takes care of it, sometimes letting the troll know exactly how he or she is wrong. Gamers are great at dishing out mounds of hate at their favorite enemy developers, but as soon as they are silenced or booted out of the conversation, they claim victimhood. Do your community a favor and take care of the trolls who are ruining your forums. If you are that afraid of losing one player, you might consider how many you have lost because you let that troll control your boards.
|
On Beau's advice I looked up Derek Smart's posts and policies on trolls and the way he deals with them on the Alganon forums, and I hope he won't mind if I quote him here, as this is going to become our policy going forward:
Derek Smart wrote:
There are gamers who care and then there are anti-social misfits who act out their angst at anything they can lash out at. Me, I have no problems banning people who are rude and who don't offer anything constructive. And by the time the dust settles, all we will be left with are those who follow the rules and who care about the game enough to be constructive in their postings and thus help up move the game forward. Nothing else matters and I simply don't care about anything or anyone outside of that user base. And that's why I keep the company funded, keep it going and continue guiding the team so that we can stay on track.

Two very sensible people speaking a lot of sense, in our opinion.
And here in the Kingdom of Illyria, with the best will in the world and all due respect to every single person who chooses to share their opinions in the forums, it's our opinion that really matters.

SC

Utterly disagree with this statement. This game is designed to encourage intrigue and metagaming. The GM's are not here to "control" it. If you want something like that you are in the wrong game.
Meanwhile the GM's should be proud that the game is evolving in the ways that they hoped and should be allowed to express that pride especially when they do it without reference to or judgment of the specific parties involved - as happened here.
BTW - if you really are against metagaming then you should be arguing against LH's actions from the start - they are what lead to the counter-actions against him/her/it.

OK, one little suggestion for the world. This game was made by StormCrow, and ThunderCat. Aneirin and Lionz Heartz, you are players who have decided that you don't like the way that SC makes the game. The obvious course of action would be to GO PLAY EVONY! Leave the people who actually like the game for what it is- a SANDBOX- to play the game!

I'm not taking any sides whatsoever and had no idea that this whole thing was going on - contrary to popular belief I'm not omniscient and don't have time to read most of what is posted in the forums, nor do I (or any other dev) spend any time whatsoever on the intricacies of inter-alliance politics. We don't, frankly, care about the detail in any way whatsoever; it's of supreme disinterest to us.
There will always be tinfoilers who read GM involvement into anything and everything we do or so - my comment signifies nothing more than that I love the meta-game (regardless of where it comes from) and I believe that the newly revealed existence of a concerted cross-alliance disinformation programme shows a lot about the depth of gameplay available in Illyriad.
Regarding those players who believe devs favour certain players in the game and are corruptible, may I suggest that you save all of us some time and quit Illyriad now?
There's nothing we'll ever be able to say or do that'll convince you otherwise, and the minute we feel that irrational and unsubstantiated accusations of this nature are being thrown around to the detriment of the game as a whole, we're simply going to start banning the players making them.

SC |
Edit: Aneirin, SC's comment was about the level of play in the game, I think you are readng too much into his comment. The Devs have always gone out of their way to avoid commenting on any conflict or controversy in this game. I applaud them for not taking sides and altering public opinion. Geez, guys lighten up.

I am sorry Stormcrow but by any stretch of the imagination this is a flawed response. Quite simply you should not have commented. Metagaming is for the players to attempt and for the GM's/ Moderator's to control in impartial way. Moreover it is questionable whether an impartial observer should show admiration for the disingenuous nature of Metagaming as it can, if taken to far, have a detrimental affect on players and the games reputation.
You are, of course, a charismatic GM, whose every word is taken on trust by the player base and especially by the younger members of the community, who hold you high regard and are greatly influenced by your views. You will know that when appreciative comments or decisions are open to interpretation on issues where opinions are divided - the best course of action is not to make them at all.

On a different note, I must have to tell you off SC. You have started to use Blue, which is TC's color!
