Having just started; I noted an abandoned town with population on my map. 1. Am I able to walk in and take over? Anything I should be aware of about such a place?

Suggest scout and spy it first. There might be leftover troops.

You might want to check the alliance tag. Some alliances object to people walking in and taking over towns of their members, even inactive or abandoned ones.

Sieging and capturing a city requires a fair amount of research that requires a level 20 barracks, as well as specialized troop types (which can be gotten around by having someone else with those troops assist with the siege). Any city that you capture must be reduced to 25% of its starting population in order to capture.

All of which is to say, don't just go for the nearest city without evaluating your options. Ideally you want to choose a well-developed city in a desirable neighborhood in order to get the most value for your time. (Cities can be moved after capture, but a city that's already where you want it makes things easier.)

Great questions, Force. Rill is wise to advise you to not seek to capture a city (once you have commensurate research and military needed) if it is still part of an alliance.

Digioso has a great tool for surveying all of the abandoned towns closest to you: http://www.digioso.org/dilly_tools/illy_abandoned.pl

Look for the ones that are not affiliated with alliances, for starters. Those are all fair game.

There are tremendous advantages to capturing cities versus having to settle all of them. When you capture them, you also capture any leftover gold and resources, as well as any discoveries that that city had made. But the REAL advantage is that you also inherit all of the research. As you now well know, doing research is the "brake" in Illyriad. So, getting a captured city with most or all of its research done -- even if it has low population -- is well worth it.

Of course, sieging and capturing a city ain't easy. Getting a level 20 barracks is a lot of work, and all that gets you is the ability to research the siege technologies. After that, you have to build siege engines, which is time consuming and expensive.

One way to speed this up a little is to partner with someone who already has a siege army. Once you research the siege technologies, you can simply send an army without catapults to siege a city, while a partner who has catapults sends a second siege. That person will reduce the city population for you and, once you reach raze population, you can storm and capture it.

There's still lots to be done, but it cuts down a bit on the timeframe.

Hope this helps!
