Whenever you feel like it. Worst that will happen is you aren't producing enough gold to pay them and they'll go away. But the best way to learn is to try stuff. As a very wise goose once said "There is no secret recipe!"

Arcanum Illyria has the units fully documented (and browsable by categories, etc.). The building documentation is far from complete, unfortunately, but in progress.

The best source for prerequisites for this sort of thing is the research tree. It will indicate what research is needed and what buildings are required to do the research.
The research tree is your friend!

Is there a list of buildings in Illy that shows what you need to build them, what buildings you need to have previously built and tells us what they do? I know it's a big ask, but, I know that some people like to compile this type of thing.
On the same topic, does the same thing exist for personnel? In both cases, it's Humans that I'm mainly interested in.

As a new player, your best defenses are magic (runes) and a good alliance.
The most serious type of attack in Illyriad is the siege. Defending against sieges actually involves attacking the opposing army, which will be occupying a square outside your city. So the advice on good armies for attacking actually also applies to defending against a siege. Defending against a raid or attack on your city square depends on the type of terrain your city is built on and your race. It also depends on the size of your opponent. If the attacker is a fellow new player, your best bet is a good rune. If the attacker is a much larger player, it doesn't really matter what units you have, since they are likely to be thoroughly crushed. In many cases it is more prudent to simply move the army out of the way of a much larger attacking force, by sending it to attack an empty square during the time the attack will land. The worst thing that will happen is that they'll take whatever basic resources are not protected by your vault. Many larger players use bows, spears or a mix of bows and spears for defense. Bows work best to defend mountains, and spears work better in forests. Plains are hard to defend in general. Note: I haven't fought in an all-out war, so this advice is mostly applicable to the new player who is facing occasional random attacks, which is generally the most that will occur in Illyriad as it is today. As discussed in my guide to self defense to new players, diplomatic attacks, particularly thieves, are in general much more of a concern to new players than are military attacks. Therefore I recommend that new players focus on defending from this type of attack. |

Infantry and cavalry units are probably best for attacking NPCs because they have high attack. One idea would be to build a small army of infantry (you can start with as few as 10 units). You can use those units to go after NPCs that number Few or Handful. NPCs have varying difficulty levels, so it might be good to start with wolves, wild dogs and giant rats. The key is to maximize the experience you get for each casualty of your own, since you may not have buildings that produce advanced resources yet, or they might produce them pretty slowly.
You want to think about what type of commander to use as well. T2 cavalry commanders have the advantage of being pretty fast and having good attack characteristics, but you might not want to wait to fight things until you can build a level 15 barracks, which is required for t2 cavalry. For a first commander, you might consider studying and leveling up Heroism and Forced March. Heroism increases attack and will reduce your casualties. Information on the choice of commander and which skills to level can be found in Fluffy's excellent guide. |

Review the Tech Tree for Military and City items. You will learn that you will not be able to build military units until you have certain levels of various technologies and buildings. This will take you some time to obtain. You will also need weapons and armor to build military units. In short, you can not build an army until you have a functioning economy with factories making goods and tax revenue. An army will need to a certain size to give you enough options regarding targets. I recommend at least 100 units. Of course, a smaller army can attack the smaller NPC targets.Your army will need to be supported with tax revenue. Smaller city population will limit the tax revenues which will limit the army size, too.
I recommend avoiding army building until you are around 450 pop. so you can focus on growing your city very early on. I also recommend building only Advanced military units. (Orc spears are an exception.)
Early on, questing is a more viable activity. It will cost you less, provide stories for you to read, and reward you with goodies. The Trade Quests are fruitful. The Diplomacy Quests will cause you losses in Scouts - and many require Advanced Scouts.
