newb question: when to build an army?

   Hi there, I've been playing for mmm 4 days now? 

Finding that after about 15-25 mins of upgrading buildings, research and sending out caravans, I'm kinda bored. But there are plenty of little purple circles on the map, those look interesting. So I'm wondering when I should build a small army and go out there and start kicking some mobs around. 

- How big should a starting army be? 
- What should my city look like first (food prod, cash flow)
- What units should be in it? 
- Now that I'm "armed" how should I defend myself?
