Brilliant, this was very educational:  If I consider to send reinforcements I should not waste time with a gathering of whatever, big cities fall fast, and the disappointed reinforcing troops simply return.  And queuing a replacement for the unexpected survivors also turned out to be a bad idea. Embarrassed

Actually Dunnoob, there were troops in the city but there was no battle when the city fell, so you didn't miss much. I think it's a bug.

Myr, I have also heard reports of that bug, I thought it only applied to inactive accounts, but it's good to know.
