Ryelle's army was defending the square alone when it was killed by another single army.  Perhaps it is the total number of armies involved?

I have had up to 21 mail messages of an army being destroyed while defending which seems to indicate another factor is at work.

Makes sense HonoredMule, since my army on which I only got one report was destroyed while defending a square (and thus was fighting only a single army at the time).

I had that happen, too.  About 30X more armies destroyed than I actually sent.  :)

The issue is almost certainly related to how many separate armies your army faces when it comes to its demise.

I received multiple Army destroyed mails just like mentioned above, for the first time.
I was using safari, Version 5.1.2 (6534.52.7)
whereas I have never had the problem in firefox.
...and miles to go before I sleep.

Ryelle had an army destroyed earlier with just one mail.  So this doesn't seem to be happening to everyone.  Maybe it's just certain squares?

Ok...  I had just finished clearing out my mailbox - and then 1 min later, I had 50 new messages!!! (>.<)  I opened my inbox - all from the system and all to tell me that 1 army had been destroyed. 

It must have been a horrendous death to merit that many system reports...  I have filed a petition (#5696) for you.  (^_^)  Thank you for checking into this for me.

i ve also got multiple mails for destroyed armies..some of my alliance mates have also faced the same issue
