Check the forum threads for the fortune teller, that'll give you some clue.
<Deranzin> I'd agree with darkone on that

What if "no grand plan" means you do not need to have all crafting buildings but just a specific combination of them?

Then "subtle innovations" could mean each building should be developed to a specific level, not necessarily the top one. Maybe you also have to keep all buildings at approx the same level as you develop them (I mean rather than to build up the first to 20 then start with another).

PS: I haven't researched any crafting yet so someone else should experiment with this, if they like.

I tried to calculate the possible combinations for 16 buildings and 20 levels using this app:

I entered these values:

n=20
r=16
is order important? no (not sure about this, but choosing yes means even more combinations)
are repetitions allowed? yes (i.e. some buildings can be at the same level)

and the result was ~4 billions (if I got the maths right, and please correct me if I'm wrong), so no wonder nobody got the right combination yet.

I also tried to think how to eliminate some of the possible but unlikely combinations:
1) Maybe you don't need all crafting buildings to find the prize but it's also unlikely you can get it with just 1 or 2, so the right number must be something in between.
2) You probably need all the buildings related to armour crafting but you can do without (most of) the others
3) All the buildings should be at the same level (not really sure about this) and (as suggested in my previous post) must be leveled up at the same pace.

Honestly I don't think it's something like that... We know one thing that should be reliable and that is that, once you have obtained the answers from the fortune teller, you need tentacles to move further in the obtention of special items like the master crafted chainmail. In my opinion it is the top-priority for those who look for the master crafted armour since it is the most promising clue we have.
Then building units to feed the Heart of Corruption — in order to get tentacles — seems to me to be what is to be done in the current state of our knowledge.

The drop rate on tentacles is not very high, and most players have little hope of the heart beating for long enough to get troops there and have the corrupted units travel back to drop a tentacle because of the distances involved.  It's possible that a multi-racial group of players will need to gather around Audrey, feed her and then sell the tentacles at drastically inflated prices in order for any large body of people to get the discovery.
