I'm sure the devs will reactive your tutorial if you ask nicely in a petition if you closed it early...

That's why I built a Brewery in the 1st place. I thought I would get to do special missions. But then I discovered I needed something else, I forget now what the extra stuff is, but it was way out of reach and I was overwhelmed by the sense of helplessness that I abandoned that path.

I have been "raiding" (not in the game term, but in the effective sense) inactive players, too. But I still think if I had a "do-over", I would have waited to get an Army. I only did it not knowing what was happening and understanding that "nothing" is not a plan.
Looking back, a Vault covers what I needed for the front-end of the game. If an enemy can not siege me, and he can not degrade my economy beyond stealing my accumulated resources, then my enemy is no real threat if I maintain the proper Vault levels. The low protection for manufactured goods is not an effective limit if I have not made manuf. goods.

Be careful with using military to farm. Early in the game it wasn't done much because military had abysmal carrying capacity and barely earned their own upkeep unless you had a lot of farms around you. Now that this has changed, expect to see people seeding farms with defensively strong occupations for the commander experience and defensive score.
...yet another reason to get to know your neighbors. You'll want to know whether any of them are likely to show such tactical tendencies.
Thieves, though they take a while to get, are a good goal for which to strive. They pay for themselves quite well also, and you'll want them as soon as possible anyway to defend your home turf when the vault space starts getting too cramped.

I think i've only been playing about 8 or 9 days also, but i've found having a small army is coming in pretty handy. Like the rest of you I can't find the resources I need near my city for my caravans. How ever there are several innactive players not far from me that i've been looting with my army for the last few days. A couple of them are only about 20 minutes away, and my small army of 25 spear men bring back about 500 resources each time. So in an hour and 20 minutes I can hit a city twice and bring back 500 resources, where in the same time I'm lucky if my caravan hasn't been interupted, and is only going to bring back 200 resources. The only downside is you can't choose what resources you want, and I can only hit the cities about 2 or 3 times before they run out of resources.
