HOLD THE PRESSES!

Am I reading here that the competition has left the flags and moved to cities?

I understand that the losses are starting to mount up.  I understand that long-term resiliency in the tournament rests on an alliances economic output.  I understand the temptation to attack a competitors economy (i.e., cities) to weaken competitors.   However, I think King Sigurd created this tournament to provide his champions an opportunity to flex their muscles and strut their stuff in a setting that would avoid war.

Keep in mind, fellow Illyrians, that opening campaigns on cities can quickly escalate into Global Thermo-nuclear Warfare (i.e. sieges and loss of cities).  And for all those that think "well, it is just a game." I want to highlight the important fact that when alliances do go nuclear, they select high value targets (big players, big cities) and the end result is that the defeated player leaves Illy for good in many cases.  And when a player leaves Illy, remaining players lose a friend and Illy becomes less fun for the survivors.

I, for one, implore all Illyrians to maintain the proper spirit of good sportsmanship in the tournament and restrict all activites to the flag sites.

Fladrin,

A couple of observations re: your attack at the east flag above:

1) Hey!  Dlord attacked another flag.  I don't recall seeing much Dlord activity away from the southeast flag.

2) GOON had 13,407 defending the flag.  You attacked with 2,000 and caused GOON 5,125 casualties.  This is an outstanding loss ratio at over 2.5 defenders killed for each attacker killed.  This compares very favorably to the last battle I analyzied which had a loss ratio of 1.45 defenders killed for each attacker killed.  2 more armies just like this attacker and Dlord would have taken the flag from GOON.

There's a whole range of things that could be done outside of a tournament square from a simple scouting expedition to find out what further attacks might be incoming all the way up the diplo chain into assassinating commanders to delay potential attacks.   Players could even go beyond that to a siege on a capital to cause a mass withdrawal from a square so it can be taken.

All of these options are "sanctioned" and "fair" - this is a sandbox after all - but some are more evil than others so it's a case of how much you want the victory, how evil you want to be and whether you want to accept the consequences.

Personally I feel that using scouts on an alliance that is attacking the fort you hold to see what strength they have left is just common sense and that, compared to the 700K+ tournament casualties so far, assassinating some commanders to get an edge is pretty small change.

OTOH - I can also see how people might have expected tournament things to stay on tournament squares - despite Strategos's comments in the other thread.

With all that said - H? members have now voted *not* to use diplo methods to aid us in the tournament unless we are the recipient of those same methods.

The whole "sandbox" rationale is bunk.  The argument is that I am theoretically able to play "my own game" in Illy.  Yeah, I was able to do that exactly 8 days until someone decided that his "own game" meant attacking me.  The reality is that only the biggest player/alliance gets to play their game.  And everyone else has to do it their way or die.  The only working ethic in Illy is Might is Right.

Man, I'll tell you flat out, this news of city attacks has really disspirited me.   Now instead of this being a friendly competition, it is a prelude to war.   This is a total buzz-kill.

Hey, Dude (long live the Alamo!)

No worries, it was just a blip and has all been worked out.  I agree that anything is "within the rules" but some stuff is more evil than others... and H? have made a good and fair decision.

I think The Dude doesn't find the tournament satisfyingly entertaining and would rather see "quickly escalate into Global Thermo-nuclear Warfare".
Bartimeus, your very best friend.

Just to confirm what has been explained by some of our management team in VIC... there has been no mercenary or other 'secret' rationale for our attacks. And to add to that, over the last 24 hours we've been hit by a series of magic and diplo attacks. I'm glad to see this has been resolved now...
