Hello.

I'm a new player here and I really like the lore and how deep this game seems to be for strategy - the thing is I don't normally like games where you fight other players that much.

I've had *a lot* of horrible experiences trying to play games such as these.  For the others I've played - normally after my few days of protection runs out, I am beat into non existence by people far stronger than I am - either farmed to death or just wiped out.

Now I see a lot of things on the map to fight besides players - but that of course isn't going to help me not get destroyed :D

If I'm not that into fighting players, is this even a game I should be considering at all?  I see a lot of interesting things here but I just simply don't know if it's the right game for someone like me so I wanted to check what others think and do?

Are there any people that try to play mostly against the creatures of the land and sometimes do honorable dueling fights?  Are my previous experiences just in games with much different systems so that my horror is unfounded?  (Games like Travian, Stone Age Kings, a few others).  I admit that if I joined up with people in Travian that probably would have helped me to survive.

It looks pretty interesting here and I'm giving it a try but if I'm going to have a rude awakening and just be pounded to death later I'd like to learn now.  If however there is a way for someone with my playing preferences to have fun here I'd like to know too :D

Thanks for taking the time to read my post in any case.

There are training alliances you can join for your protection.

Personnally I reccommend 'Toothless' (T?) which will help you grow in a safe enviroment.

Welcome mewmew, nice to see a new face round here, as always. (Not that that is a rare sight or anything!)

I think you will find that the advanced players who COULD totally stomp on you and destroy your account when you leave protection will generally prefer to focus their efforts/armies on more profitable/challenging enterprise than noobie bashing. You will also find that if a well developed player wipes out an active newbie for no particular reason and that player complains to some alliances, the well-developed player could very soon find his own cities under seige.

So basically your main worry once you leave protection is the other newer players around you, who will not be able to destroy your account, but they will be able to give you a headache while you are trying to grow. Good diplomacy is always advised, but the best cure is joining a decent training alliance who will protect you, as Lawn mentioned.

Hope that helps a bit.
C.

Welcome mewmew!
I also had the same problems as you and thought the same...."how long before I am wiped out"
However I found that not to be the case. In fact quite the opposite it true.
I joined a "training alliance" FDU and there everyone took the time to answer my questions, gave sound advice and helped me when my resources were low.  I have since left FDU and joined another alliance.

So I suggest that you sit back, relax and enjoy the MANY surprises that Illyriad will bring you.  Big smile

Good luck and hope to see you in global chat. (also a great place to ask questions)

No.

This game is mine, and you can't have it.  So bugger off.  Tongue

In a more serious tone, I think you'll find this is one of the most friendly and equitable pvp-enabled browser games you can find.  The community is stacked with helpful souls and equally detests injustice and manipulation.  Other game communities may condemn injustice, but without careful consideration of facts and situations are more prone to become its unwitting hand in their self-righteous, misguided fervor.

The top alliances and major powers here are all marked by considerably more maturity and prudence, so we all complain about this damned unbreakable peace instead.  Of course, there's actually plenty of warfare and hostile activity as well--just little involving the largest powers.  We depend on the tournaments to sate our bloodlust.

To some extent, these community values are rooted in the game mechanics.  With semi-decent planning and appropriate steps taken in city development, you can easily ensure that farming you is an unprofitable exercise.  And taking a player's city isn't something any person can do very often.  As a consequence, struggles over territory and personality clashes are the primary motive for conflict.

MMG,

If you are attacked while still a new/young player, please come on to Global Chat and speak up.  There are several large vet players that monitor global chat.  Most of us do not like small players being beat up on by bigger players for no good reason.

Illy offers a lot to do besides fight other players.  Questing, Trading, killing static Non-player Combatants (animals/monsters).  And of course, developing upir own cities.

If you desire an alliance, there are many actively recruiting new players.  I recommend waiting a while before joining an alliance, tho.

I'd like to thank everybody who responded here and who mailed me in game as well.

There is no question anymore, so many people have been so cool I definitely want to stay to play.

I don't know what will happen long term but at the least I should have fun for some time :D

Thanks to people who sent me resources too after seeing this post.  I never asked for them but a number of people sent them just to help a starting player and that was pretty great too.  Nobody asked for anything in return either.

I'm actually thinking of joining a training alliance that's supposed to be for new people and finding my best fit for a permanent alliance after a bit.  I guess I'll see what happens there but I'm not that worried about being owned and destroyed by super powers anymore.  It happens so many times in games such as this I had to ask tho.

When looking for an alliance I guess I will have to explain more about myself and what my best fit would be (both for me and for the alliance).  But that will be a little later :D  I got to poke around some more first.

So thanks again to everybody who's been giving tips, helping, replying, etc.  I'm almost overwhelmed by how many cool people are around here honestly (being used to the normal general internet population that is :D).

I'm happy to see positive posts like this.  Too many have been negative and complaining that I rarely read all posts.

Oh my god! You don't read all posts? And you call posts negative? Oh my god, MUF. Such an idiot!

Wink
Joking aside, he's right. Beneath the humour, and the 'Thank you carrot much's, Mr. Ubiquitous Feral is a wise guy....
