I am a relatively new player and I have recently started hunting NPCs to gain some experience for my commanders (and to gather the spoils, of course).
While looking for an easy prey next to my village I spotted this pack of wild dogs. Easy-peasy I thought, so I sent a small army to attack them and, once they were done, I followed up with gatherers. By the time my cotters got there, a pack of wolves had settled in the square, so they got killed on arrival. Well, you can fool me once but... wait, it seems you can fool me twice, and a third time too, but definitely not a fourth! The first time my cotters were slain I did not even notice, so I see this nice pack of wolves sitting on a nearby square (with the added bonus of the spoils from the previous kill) and, sure enough I send another army followed, as usual, by gatherers. Gatherers were killed by more wolves on arrival. This time I started suspecting something weird was going on, but I always delete the battle reports immediately, so I had no way to be sure. I was foolish enough to send a third set of hunters and gatherers with the same results: NPCs easily killed, gatherers dispatched, new NPCs (wolves again) settle in the square before gatherers arrive and kill them. The fourth time I finally got more cautious so I sent the army to the doomed square but held the gatherers for a couple of hours to see what would happen and, sure enough, the square was occupied again, this time by an horde of scuttlers. They are too strong for the army I can currently raise from my small village. If any of you happens to be stationed close to the doomed square and wants to try for themselves, please let me know what happens. To cut a long story short, the same square was occupied by NPCs FIVE times in a row within a few hours! This cannot just be a coincidence. If any of you has a little statistics expertise and knows the average spawning frequency of NPCs, you can have fun calculating the odds. Me, I'm going out to buy a lottery ticket right now! So my question is: Is this normal game behaviour or a bug? Are there special squares where NPCs are supposed to spawn more often? ********************************************************************************************************************** As I said above, I deleted the battle reports but here are the notifications relative to the events: Military units from Umhmu's town Rivalda outbound to [325|283] in Lucerna with Hostile intentions. 19 hours ago 23 Jan 2014 21:05:34 Umhmu's army arrives at [325|283] in Lucerna 17 hours ago 23 Jan 2014 22:26:24 1 (Cotter) from Rivalda arrived at [325|283] in Lucerna but were mortally savaged by (wolves) and have not returned. 16 hours ago 23 Jan 2014 23:23:15 Military units from Umhmu's town Rivalda outbound to [325|283] in Lucerna with Hostile intentions. 15 hours ago 24 Jan 2014 01:05:29 Umhmu's army arrives at [325|283] in Lucerna 13 hours ago 24 Jan 2014 02:26:19 2 (Skinners) from Rivalda arrived at [325|283] in Lucerna but were mortally savaged by (wolves) and have not returned. 12 hours ago 24 Jan 2014 03:19:33 Military units from Umhmu's town Rivalda outbound to [325|283] in Lucerna with Hostile intentions. 4 hours ago 24 Jan 2014 11:19:21 Umhmu's army arrives at [325|283] in Lucerna 3 hours ago 24 Jan 2014 12:40:10 1 (Cotter) from Rivalda arrived at [325|283] in Lucerna but were mortally savaged by (wolves) and have not returned. 2 hours ago 24 Jan 2014 14:02:40 Military units from Umhmu's town Rivalda outbound to [325|283] in Lucerna with Hostile intentions. 1 hour ago 24 Jan 2014 14:41:18 Umhmu's army arrives at [325|283] in Lucerna 10 minutes ago 24 Jan 2014 16:02:09 Edited by Dwrwd - 25 Jan 2014 at 13:51 |

It is a bug, one that's been described before. The way to stop the animals from respawning after a kill is to park your army on it (use occupy instead of attack). A lot of players like having this type of square near them because it offers them a ready supply of hides and animal parts. The rest of us are just jealous.

So, if I occupy the square (while I harvest), will the NPCs respawn after the occupying army leaves? Or will the square be free from the "curse" forever?

It's a spawn point. I wouldn't call that a bug. There is one just south of my desert city.
Regardless, you should always occupy with your army after making a kill, so that there is no doubt who owns the hides and parts, and also so your harvesters don't get killed by NPCs or other players. |

If you occupy they will keep spawning as soon as your troops leave. Which city is this? After the war is over, I may want to siege you. I like hunting.

I've noticed spots like this; in my notes I describe them as "animal hot-spots"; but the "spawn point" hypothesis is highly credible.
It's marginally more efficient to send one army to attack (it'll get some loot off the kill - I'm always amused by the amount of gold wolves carry) with another close on its heels to occupy (so that your harvesters can harvest in safety), rather than setting the attacking army to occupy (it won't get loot - which is kinda dumb, but that's how the game works). One reason for this is simply that the right troops to occupy a square effectively aren't always the right ones to attack it; and the right equipment is always different (the weapons and armour with good defensive bonuses aren't the ones with good attacking bonuses; and, personally, I only give equipment to the defensive team, mostly because it's tedious to have to tidy up after the inevitable losses from the attacking team). |
