Let's not forget that land is a meaningless means of measuring dominance, especially when the system merely recognizes the number of plots a player/alliance has and not the extent to which they have been developed.
In other words, to the game it is better to have 3 x level 1 sov. than 1 x level 5 sov.
When we look at other players we look at how many towns they have and how big those towns are as a measure of their size and capability not their sov. so why look at an alliance differently? |
I wouldn't say land is meaningless...sovving takes money which means you have a way to make money. Usually only bigger towns which need extra food or faster military /etc. make much sov.
There have been other recent arguments in the forumns of people saying population is meaningless because you can have a huge town which is huge because tax rate is low and so can't afford military.
The point is that military strength/other types of strength such as money/population/number of towns/land area/etc. are all related to each other in complicated ways. Which I think is the whole reason there are lots of different types of ranks in this game. It also depends on what you mean by 'dominance' of course.
From my point of view, I think the land criteria is fun (and I hope it means more in the future as the game evolves--for example how will factions treat sov?) but I think of the 4 'meaningful' alliance ranks population is perhaps the most important and number of members perhaps the least important.
But, regardless, that is just my opinion and I am sure others have opinions at least as valid as mine.
But the point of this thread is that Harmless? is now not rank 1 in number of towns, land area, or number of players. So.. 3 out of 4 of the at least semi-meaningful ranks including the default. It is a bit of a psychological shock just seeing the rank list that way... I certainly have not seen it happen (or at least noticed it) before now in my two years of playing.
Of course Harmless? is also ranked 1 by the oldest alliance category. Which I wouldn't put in the category of 'real' ranks.. but does also have a cetain psycholigical affect in how people view them.
