Gold sov spots

As the title suggest, I was thinking about gold sov spots and wondering if they'd work. Obviously the cost would need to be something other than gold, as paying gold for gold wouldn't make sense. I was thinking making the cost something other than food as well, since just raising your taxes could cover that. I was thinking this could offer an alternate way of gaining gold without driving your food down. It would need to be balanced so it wouldn't offer enough gold to completely eliminate the need for your taxes but it could offer a little more choice and perhaps help people balance things out a bit more. I was thinking the cost would be a lot of basic resources, much more than current ones cost but maybe someone else can think of an alternative way to pay for it.
