Topic: Give account away ? Alert ? Posted: 09 Aug 2012 at 18:32 |
|
Well, I've decided Illyriad is not my thing anymore (many reasons, no point listing them here). My account is fairly developed, so I was thinking of giving it away to one of the other members in the alliance I'm in. Nahtania, one of my former sitters, did the same (quit the game and gave the account away to his alliance mates to deal with). Someone else now holds that account. So, I'm assuming it's perfectly within the rules.
My question is who do I contact about the change? Do I have to alert anyone (other than my alliance)? A GM? How? Who? Details? I plan to just change the password to something neutral and give the login info to my alliance member.

Sharing passwords (aka giving away accounts) is against the rules.

It is!? I don't really see that in the Code of Conduct & Rules post. Not that I'm arguing, but why exactly is it against the rules (I see it as a dying shame that you can't)? It is my account, it is my password, it is my information. I understand that "not sharing passwords" is for my own security, but I don't see that applicable at all, in this situation. I can't even imagine what form of exploitation this could ever lead to. I ask out of concern, curiosity, and clarity.

The reason is that the devs want new players to build up their own accounts. This makes for better gaming. You get to experience the whole journey instead of starting halfway or near the end. And of course there is the business reason that a new player will tend to use more prestige if he has to build up his own account. If people are just gonna leave and give their accounts to new players, there will be fewer prestige purchases. Also, these new players will stick around for a shorter time (as per my first reason... they start halfway and miss the start). The rule is in the terms of service: Restricted access
- Access to certain areas of our website is restricted. We
reserve the right to restrict access to other areas of our website, or
indeed our whole website, at our discretion.
- If we provide you with a user ID and password to enable
you to access restricted areas of our website or other content or
services, you must ensure that that user ID and password is kept
confidential.
- We may disable your user ID and password in our sole discretion without notice or explanation

"you must ensure that that user ID and password is kept
confidential."
I had read that as "you should keep your info safe for your own security", not so much "it's illegal to give away any of your own information". Iffy in the wording, although the rest of the rule is quite clear. Meh, oh well.
Thank you for the response, now I understand.

I personally am fine with not allowing accounts to be transferred between players. However, this practice has been allowed in the past, and when I've inquired about it specifically I was told that it was OK, as long as no player had more than two accounts at a time.
So my question is, has there been a change in this? I don't care what the rule is, as long as I know what the rule is.
There have been some very clearly defined transfers of accounts from person to person that the devs were aware of, in at least one case even performing a gender change to the account to match the new owner. (That was quite some ago, back when Illy was much smaller.)
So clearly at one time transfers of accounts from one person to another were allowed. I am pretty sure even Luna said at one time or another during her tenure that it was allowed. However, now it seems to be not allowed.
So I'd like to clarify:
1) Is it correct to say that transfer of an account from one player to another is never allowed?
2) When did this change?
3) What about accounts that were transferred in the past, when this was allowed?
4) If you are willing to give a rationale for the change, I'm interested in hearing it.
To make it clear, I do not have an opinion one way or the other about this. As someone who often answers questions, I just want to make sure I have my facts straight.
Thanks!

Rather than relying on third parties to answer questions about rules, contact me directly. I answer PMs on the forums, in game mails and can be contacted at community@illyriad.co.uk.
Much more reliable than "I heard once from somewhere that one time someone said that Luna said something about something."
I stated the rule in this thread, Innoble quoted the ToS documentation (thank you). I don't think the point needs to be belabored further.

I did answer the question. See above.
I'm referring to Rill saying she's taking questions about account rules, and generally stating taking advice from a player rather than coming to me is a bad idea.
