Hello, Illyriad! Faction Play is pleased to present a new Mini Event: The Five Books of the Arch Magi

The Objective

Increase your alliance’s ranking with one or more player-led Factions (ELVES, ORCS, KELTS, MERCS, and Dlord).

The Alliance that increases their ranking the most with a Faction by the end of the quest will win that Faction’s book, along with other prizes.

Dates

Friday, March 12, 2021 00:00:00 Server Time -- Sunday, March 21, 2021 23:59:59 Server Time

The Setting

In the ages past, Empress Cymbeline of the Azure Throne saw the resplendent port at Tarponsea destroyed by a mystical, unquenchable flame that consumed the docks and ships of Azuria without explanation. An excerpt from "The Peoples of Illyria" by Historian Cardale of the Empirium details the mystery surrounding the catastrophe:

Witnesses described the fire as akin to a "living thing" that "appeared to jump from ship to ship" until not only the bulk of the fleet (who were almost entirely docked-up and secured against a storm that threatened on the horizon), but also the shipyards and workshops themselves were utterly destroyed. The cinders from the firestorm rained down on the surrounding lands for days to come.

While Cardale does not conjecture to name those who perpetrated the destruction, an extract from an Intelligence Report prepared for Empress Cymbeline of Azuria gives clues as to who she suspected had committed the heinous act:

The five Arch Magi are a relative unknown to us.

We know, as fact, simply the following:

The five are masters of each of their elements, and come from all the races of Illyria.

  • Shamaster Maldak of the Orcs is the wielder of flame

  • Geomancer Herrolf of the Dwarves has dominion over the ground

  • Enchantress Elissa of the Elves can bend the skies to do her bidding

  • Archmage Stendas, a Human believed to hail from the Windseekers, commands even the vast oceans

  • Faer Smyss of the Fey has dominion over time

Each member of the circle is surely a foe to be reckoned with individually, but it is when they combine their powers that little can stand in their way. The most apt illustration of their destructive potential is clearly visible in the very existence of the cursed Great Marsh of Fyrgis in Wolgast - created as a direct result of their assistance to King Lentas of Illyria during the purging of the Barbarian threat.

But beyond this meagre summary, they keep themselves to themselves and do not appear to interfere or mingle with the world.

We cannot guess their goals or their motives - and it would be prudent to take steps to rectify this situation.

This extract is the only known document detailing The Circle of Five, a mysterious, mixed-race consortium of casters, wizards, mages, and mystics whose loyalties and motivations have remained hidden from Illyria.

Until now.

A burglar who had been lured into the thrall of the Circle of Five somehow found himself alone in the group’s vast library. A disturbance in the flow of magic allowed him to break free of the spell and steal five beautiful books from the main study, escaping with haste to the sanctuary of The Blesséd Realm. A council of the Quendi elders studied the books, recognizing that they are eligible unless in close proximity to one another.

Each book corresponds to one of the Five. And each book wields unimaginable power. It is clear now that the flame that engulfed Tarponsea was the result of Shamaster Maldak of the Orcs’ power to wield flame -- enhanced by an enchanted factor by his four other collaborators.

The Quendi agree that the only way to ensure that The Circle of Five never gain access to this magic weapon is to disburse the books and sunder them from one another.

This quest will determine which five Alliances throughout Illyria are worthy enough to be a keeper of one of the five books of the Arch Magi.

Gameplay

  • On Friday, March 12, 2021 at 00:00:00 ST, starting Alliance Rankings will be posted on this spreadsheet for all five player-led Factions (ELVES, ORCS, KELTS, MERCS, Dlord).

  • Alliances will have until 23:59:59 on March 21, 2021 to raise their rankings with one or more of the Factions to win one (or more) of the Five Books of the Five.

  • The Alliance with the largest positive ranking change per Faction will win the Book for that Faction.

  • Alliances do NOT have to end with a net positive ranking with a Faction to win the Book; the measure is only how much the ranking improved positively.

  • Alliances can use Alliance racial composition, geography, diplomatic relationships with other Alliances, combat with the Factions, and Trade with the Factions to affect their rankings.

  • In the event of ties, Faction Play will use the following tie breakers:

    • First Tie Breaker: The Alliance with the largest number of engagements (combats + trades) wins.

    • Second Tie Breaker: The Alliance with the largest number of combat engagements wins.

    • Third Tie Breaker: The Alliance with the largest number of trade engagements wins.

    • Fourth Tie Breaker: The Alliance that spent the most gold with the Faction wins.

    • Fifth Tie Breaker: The Alliance with the most positive starting ranking with the Faction wins.

Rules

Alliance Rules

  • IMPORTANT: Entire alliances do NOT need to opt into the event in order to compete. An individual player or players may opt in and represent their entire alliance.

  • Alliance players must individually opt into Faction Play for their attacks and trades to count. Opting in requires players to either post the Faction Play Opt-in badge on their profile or indicate “FP” or “FvA” in their Alliance Role. You can read more about how to add the Opt-in badge here.

  • Alliance players who have alt in a Faction may not attack or trade with themselves to increase their Alliance’s rankings.

  • Winners must have performed a minimum of five (5) total engagements in the event to qualify for the win. An “engagement” is defined as 1) a direct attack, or 2) a purchase from a Faction Player in a Trade Hub. If the winner has fewer than 5 total engagements, the second place winner will be evaluated for the win, and so on.

  • Alliances and Alliance Players are prohibited from attacking Faction Players who are not opted into Faction Play. Some Faction Players are still new to the game and are not involved in FvF or FvA.

    • Please check Faction Profile pages. Opted-in Faction Players signal their consent via:

      • “FvA” or “FP” monikers in their role.

      • The Faction Play Opt-in badge on their profile.

  • Alliance Players may only send one attack per city per day. Alliance Players determined to be “spamming” attacks may be disqualified.

  • Only direct attacks and raids on Faction cities and encampments will affect rankings. Alliances may blockade and siege Faction cities, but it will have no effect on rankings for this event.

  • Alliances attack other opted-in alliances at their own risk! Faction Play does not govern direct AvA conflict, even in the content of a Faction Play event. Such conflicts could lead to PvP consequences of which Faction Play is not held responsible.

Faction Rules

  • For this event, Factions are prohibited from making manual adjustments to Alliances’ rankings. This means that the following actions cannot result in ranking changes:

    • Sieges

    • Blockades

    • Failed diplo attacks

    • Tributes / gifts / Bribes

    • Quests

    • Any engagement that requires a manual adjustment to Alliance rankings.

  • During the event, Factions are prohibited from attacking one another in any form, including:

    • Magic

    • Diplo attacks

    • Aggressive trade tactics (i.e. buying up a rival Faction’s sell orders)

    • Troop combat.

    • Factions can seek to encourage Alliances to attack their Factional rivals if they choose to do so.

  • Factions may not share any specific details on how an Alliance can improve their rankings, save for what information has been made publicly available to the server.

  • Factions are required to promptly submit all combats and trades into the Slack combat and trades submitters.

    • It is acceptable for one player in a Faction to be designated to submit all combats and trades, but this must be done promptly and consistently.

Strategy

Alliances have been given ample clues on how to increase their rankings with Factions. Here are some links to these clues and other guides on how the Alliance Ranking system Works:

It is up to Alliances to experiment with the algorithm to determine which actions will increase rankings with the Factions they favor.
