sorry, but i would say that this is unit size, not unit strength.

Of course a lot of weak NPCs can be more dangerous than few strong ones. But they provide more xp as well.

I would recommend to do your "difficulty guide" considering what troops do you normaly use.

I just had a conversation with someone about this guide and a very good point came up I should've pointed out originally. The MDQ is an average for all races and it does vary from race to race. Different races, different unit stats obviously. The formula is based on defensive stats only for the moment but if as they will no doubt start attacking in the future then I will revise the numbers accordingly as I need to.
Doesn't look good... doesn't look bad either!

Manannan,

Thanks so much for your guide! I've found it a tremendous help in knowing which NPCs I can attack and which I should avoid.

If I may submit my own small contribution: I've also found this reordering of the list according to difficulty a great help. And I present it here in the hope that it might benefit others as well:

In case that doesn't show up properly, here it is in graphical form:

Thank you again! It's magnanimous of you to put your accumulated expertise at the service of others in the community.

Best regards,

R.

P.S. I hope you won't mind a question: I'm still rather vague on how you derived these numbers (which informs their meaning). Would you be willing to describe your process? R

I'm working on a revised MDQ as we now have Elementals roaming Illy (they were not included in the original) and will shortly also have dragons. I would also like to include the various factions.

I've completed phase one of it which is simply taking an average of the defensive stats for each unit an NPC has and then averaging those averages. The drawback with this is that it assumes any NPC army will be made up of equal numbers of every unit. Now I don't know about you but I've never seen an NPC army with that sort of make up.

Using Giant Rats as an example and looking at all the battle reports I have for them I've killed 49107 Ratlings, 24900 Rats, 14299 Diseased Rats and 4638 Elder Bucks. That means the armies were made up of 52.84% Ratlings, 26.79% Rats, 15.38% Diseased Rats and 4.99% Elder Bucks.

The original MDQ gave a score of 1.2 while with my first method I get a score of 9.56 and with the second I get 1.751

This is based an a total of only 71 reports which is nowhere near enough to be able to get an accurate picture of the average Giant Rat army but it is already a lot better than the original method.

To do this I need to gather a LARGE number of reports (either battle or scout) giving the makeup of the NPC armies. While I'll be scouting like crazy myself I'd appreciate it if anyone who is willing would forward any scout or battle reports involving NPCs (not the factions at the moment) to me (Tensmoor) and I'll get them into a database ready to analyze.

I'll also produce a page on Illystuff showing how many reports I have for each NPC family.

Many thanks

Revised MDQ Project Update

I've now got a page on Illystuff showing the latest status of this project: https://illystuff.uk/RevisedMDQProject/

Each time the page loads the database is queried and the revised MDQ re-calculated to give the latest figure. Currently it only works for NPCs but the Factions table is 'coming soon'.

Now this is live an issue has become apparent: Look at the data for the Escaped Elementals.
Because there is only one unit in each of those families they have a 100% chance of being in the army. This means that their revised MDQ is the same as their average defense. Not sure what I'm going to do about this and any suggestions are welcome.

Please support this project by forwarding any scout or battle reports involving either NPCs or Factions to me. The more data I have the higher the level of accuracy.

Many thanks to those that have been supporting it so far.

Tens
