I believe the basic concept is already on the dev list, in the form of strategic map points to be held King-of-the-Hill style.  For certain there has been mention of random portals, and I seem to recall player/alliance bonuses as well.

The idea would be to deploy randomly into the map gems and/or archane manufacts; a player would scout their presence and he would send a monk (new unit) or a priest to take possession of it. The monk may be killed by enemy armies and may be defended by friendly armies.
The possession of gems or manufacts mya give some advantage to the player, and/or to the alliance, such as

- 5% faster building upgrades to the player, 1% faster to players of the same alliance
- 5% faster infantery speed to the player, 1% faster infantery speed to players of the same alliance
- 5% cheaper farm upgrades to the player, 1% cheaper to players fo the same alliance

And so on, for different gems, different bonus. So would be interesting to see wars to take possession of gems scattered around into the map, and so to take possession of different unique advantages
