If you look at the dev list, animal...and winged units are actually on it, however the game mechanism for obtaining them is yet to be seen. Whats more i'm sure magical units, the new spell schools, trade, crafting. Military quests, player made quest etc etc are all higer on the list of prioreties so yeah, what honoredMule said

Actually you'll also notice that a large portion of the animal armies are always cubs or pups. It'd be better if rather than simply getting a portion of the army to tame that if you attacked say 4 wolves you caould capture all of them. however in a gathering you would only ever be able to capture pups, or cubs which would take about a fortnight to turn into fully grown units, so they'd be an investment.
Also animals have no use for gold but a tamer or bestmaster etc certainly would |

Shouldn't be a simple thing like sending X unit and they go over there with Y chance of failing.
Fight the animals and keep a portion of them.... make it a commander skill. The higher the skill level, the more animals you are likely to subjagate and tame. For this benefit, they should have to actually put something up for it. Commander skill slots. Animal upkeep: Food Cause what do animals do with gold? |

What if the GM could make it a new feature?
research "animal here" taming?
then you could send the animal tamer over to where the wild animal is.

Why do you write 4 times the same thing...
Any way, the animals on special square aren't like the gatherable resources. What they actually are is a NPC armies wich you can attack to gain commander experience. Caravan are always destroyed when they land on a square occupied by any army. I don't see anything logic in wanting to gather snakes and giant spiders.
