I don't find Firefox's behavior unintuitive nor undesirable, but then I have nothing to hide.

(...says the coder with a lightweight secondary profile that auto-clears everything on exit. Tongue)

I reported the "clearing history issue" to Mozilla.  Tyler Downer was patronising, Jo Hermans was a little more lucid:

"Clearing history is clearing the URL's that you have visited in the past. It's
not clearing *your* history (as a way to erase all your private information),
if you get the semantics. You can choose (and save) what part of the data you
want to erase. If you want to erase all information, tick all the boxes."

I still strongly believe that "Clear Browsing History" means just that. I don't believe that it is intuitive, in any way, that "Clear Site Preferences" somehow means "Oh yes, clear out the rest of my browsing history and personal data".

Still, I'm enjoying Chrome as a change. It's faster, for a start.

I'll still use Firefox for testing purposes (just like I still force myself to boot up IE), as it's popular... but Chrome is fitting the bill nicely atm.  I've also given Safari a test spin, and it's not bad!

Hopefully load times should be a bit snappier now?

Heyya Strives,

If you're using Firefox... we did track down a very weird bug over the weekend regarding their upgrade to Firefox 3.6.3 towards the end of last week.

If you have used the built-in browser Zoom function (Ctrl+Mousewheel or Ctrl + + or Ctrl + -) IN THE PAST, even accidentally, and have upgraded to 3.6.3 then Firefox OCCASIONALLY has a massive problem rendering all the javascript popups.

The problem does not go away until you press Ctrl + 0 (or View / Zoom / Reset) and then suddenly everything works again, immediately.  Please note that clearing your cache and deleting *all* cached files and any personal saved data makes no difference to this issue, unless you check the "Site Preferences" button on the "Clear Recent History" as well - a button that is unchecked by default!

You also then appear to be able to use the built-in browser zoom function thereafter, without any problems.

It's a very weird bug, and as you can imagine took many hours to track it down, before we (largely accidentally) stumbled upon the solution.

Please give this a go if you're a Firefox user, and let us know whether it worked for you!

Best wishes,

GM Stormcrow

PS. Side note to this one:

Up until this weekend I loved Firefox.

I now hate it with a passion, and not simply because of this bug.

Fundamentally, a "Clear Recent History" option should actually clear your recent history.

If it's keeping a list of "Site Preferences" and Zoom Levels against a DOMAIN LIST unchecked by default, then what's the point of checking the "Clear Browsing History" option by default?

For the avoidance of doubt, when you:
  • go into "Tools"
  • select "Clear Recent History"
  • ensure the "Browsing & Download History" button is checked, and
  • press the "Clear Now" button...
in Firefox you are NOT actually clearing your entire browsing history, as it is being stored at a domain level elsewhere (in the site preferences list) and saved.

For me this is such a *massive* flaw in Firefox - breaking its implicit bargain with every user that an option to 'clear the list of sites I have visited and my browsing history' does not do so - that I have now switched to another browser altogether and won't touch Firefox again.

that issue didn't happen again, though i had the same problem 6-7 times with clicking on stuff. squares on map, resources, research description, Options button. is it just me? this tends to resolve it's self after 30-60 minutes, though it is really annoying when sending caravans or being attacked ( this hasn't happened yet but when it will i won't be able to send my troops away..)

The problems are probably all related to slow page loads.  For example, it can take 3-8 seconds for the page's "onLoad" event to trigger because that only happens when the page is fully loaded (and rendered), and before then, several functions like the popup menus aren't yet hooked into the page.  There are several such cases of buggy interface behavior before the page is fully loaded and initialized.
