Hi all,

As promised, major biomes (Polar, Desert, Marshes and Jungle) plus the faction hubs have been released onto the World Map.

Please bear in mind that the graphics that these biomes are currently using are placeholders; a full set of new world graphics is in progress and should be delivered reasonably soon.

These biomes have new and unusual resource distributions, and if you go to the areas of the map where they exist (see here for a copy of the world map) you can see their resource distributions.

Please note a few things:

  1. There will be further NPC square seeding of these biomes, but this will not occur for a few weeks (ie after the ability for players to move cities has been released next wednesday)

  2. These graphics are placeholders (just thought I'd repeat that, so people don't complain)

  3. Most of these biomes are fairly inhospitable, and many have less than 25 plots in total for the town

  4. Travel within these biomes is likely to be extremely slow, once unit pathfinding is introduced to Illyriad

  5. These particular terrain types (polar, jungle etc) will be receiving their own unique combat terrain modifiers shortly; but they're not in yet

  6. We have not yet assigned any Sovereign Structure Production bonuses to these terrain types, but this will be done tomorrow

We have not yet released the faction relationship tables and faction descriptions - these will also come ingame tomorrow.

I will be making a full post tomorrow, outlining and reconfirming *all* the rules about moving cities so that there's as little confusion as possible.

Best wishes,

GM Stormcrow

You may have already said this elsewhere but what can we do with the factions at this moment in time? :s

Its just that i found a city and when i clicked on it i had no options. Cant give it resources, send diplo's, seige it or whatever :S

So yeah - what do they do? Or is it just that they dont do much YET?

Factions do nothing right now.

It would be weird to move with a forest right into the middle of the desert or the tundra actually...
Have you guys accounted for that?

:( no factions near me. I may have to move, oh well.
By the way given that the faction capitals can't be harmed are they going to look different from faction expansions? (not soon i know) but yeah they should look different and the player protection circles on each capital won't look that good.

Yes and the differentiation will become more obvious in UI v2, as  well as being easier to spot resources and understand the regions on the map etc...

Couple more points to consider, as has been pointed out moving a forest to a desert would look wierd but even worse is game balance.
I'm assuming there will be things in the desert that will make settleing there worthwhile (given available reseources below 25), however given that teleprting players take their underlying terrain with them this would mean that players would get the normal extra resources, plus any bonuses from around the desert. (or would desert bonus's be new desert only buildings?)

What I don't understand is why anyone would want a biome city. From what I've seen, the resource distributions still only give 6 or 7 to one top resource, and then 5 or less for every other one. The sum is almost always less than 25, and there are no special production bonuses. I was expecting distributions closer to 7.1.2.9.3 or something, but as it is now, I see no reason not to just carry on as if biomes were never released.

Edit-Sorry if that came off as mean, and I'd like to add that the devs did an amazingly quick job, fastest game development I have seen.

I'm a bit confused by this. What's the point of them if they're mostly places you'd never want to go to?
