Hey all,
I spent a week(awhile ago, RL got busy so it took me awhile to actually get all the data into a presentable form) in a well known training alliance(using a terraforming alt of mine, not my main account) trying to find out what questions new players have about land claims. The following is a list of the most commonly asked questions while I was there. Ok, my requested rules for this topic: First please don't try to troll, if you have additional questions please IGM the player in game to keep debates off this topic I am requesting that we keep this for information only and not debate. Second, I will not reply to any post in this topic so if you have questions for me IGM me in game. Third, I have posted MY opinions of what I BELIEVE will happen in the original, I will reply with how T-SC will handle each question individually, I request other BL claiming alliances reply with specific answers for their alliances as well, also if anyone else would like to state their opinions to the questions, go right ahead, just state that they are YOUR opinions. Fourth, if you have any questions you would like me to add to the list please IGM them to me in game and if I feel they should be added I will edit the original to add the questions and then reply with a comment stating "The original post has been edited to include the following question: ...." 1. What are the purposes/rational behind land claims? How will this impact the game into the future? Each alliance has its own individual reasons for making them, but in general they tend to fall under increased planning abilities for future growth. 2. Do I have to obey the land claims? No. Land claims are a player convention not a game mechanic so if you want to flat out ignore that people have made public land claims you can, but be aware that if you do so you may end up with sieges on your city. 3. Will I be welcomed into an area that is claimed by an alliance? How will new players be incorporated into land claims alliances? Are they welcome? Excluded? Where can new players go to find out more about each land claim alliance? That actually depends on which alliance is making the claim and why they made it. Read the claim, read the alliance's profile and if you have any more questions IGM the leadership of that alliance or ask in GC, you will get info. 4. What is stopping the claiming alliance from using me to find them good city spots and then taking the spots for themselves? Nothing actually but you need to consider that most claiming alliances have been on location for close to a year. If they have not found the good city spots around them by now and need new players to tell them where those spots are then they have more serious problems then trying to enforce a land claim. Also keep in mind that different playstyles need different things to be a "good city spot" so a good city spot for you may be a bad spot for the claiming alliance. 5. What happens to players with towns in an area that suddenly goes from being free and open territory to a land claim? What options do said players have? Will they be able to stay in the territory and still be able to join another alliance not affiliated with the land claim alliance? That depends on the claiming alliance. I predict nothing will happen to the player other then an offer of support if they decide to move out. If any alliance does start "forcing" players to move without a reasonable(this is at the determination of other alliances) cause they are going to get a lot of war declarations really quick and not just from the Elgea powerhouses, several BL claiming alliances will probably also declare which will give the Elgea powerhouses a nice foothold to launch sieges from since the BL alliances can send the slow cats and the Elgea alliances can send the faster support troops. Even though both sides(Elgea powers and BL claiming alliances) have their differences I am pretty sure they will both team up temporarily to discourage anyone from overabusing new players. 6. What if the leadership of the claiming alliance changes in the future and they change the policy on allowing independents? I can't answer this since I can't predict the future but based on what has happened in the past all you would have to do is call on nearby military alliances for help and if the claiming alliance did go overboard they would find themselves in a war of survival against all of their neighbors(should be easier to figure out who these alliances are now since we have a land claim map). 7. Is it likely that current claims may change shape in the future? Again I can't tell the future but if I had to speculate then I would say yes as alliances change I can see them changing what areas they will claim. Wars/negotiations will probably also change the borders. 8. Do you ever think it is likely that BL will be taken over completely by land claims, making it really hard for new players to explore and settle? This is another prediction of the future and therefore hard to answer, the best response I have come across is the following quote which I know doesn't answer the first part of the question but is the best I can come up with: "think of the claims as a way to 'filter' players rather than deny them access outright. It gives alliances like T-SC (for example) a way to greet the people that are seeking permission through IGM first." said by a mentor in the training alliance I toured (I was asked by the leader of the alliance to keep all names confidential) 9. May I hunt/harvest inside of someones land claim? That depends on the land claim. I suggest you read the actual claim and if it is confusing ask for clarification from the claiming alliance. If enough people IGM the leadership of the alliance I am pretty sure they will edit their claim to include the answer to this(just to stop all the IGMs). As of the time of this posting I have not seen a single BL land claim that restricts hunting/harvesting based on the land claim, some do restrict based on 10sq rule but none due to the land claim itself. 10. What is the primary differences between alliance "clusters" and land claims? What are the similarities? Atm, land claims tend to be larger and there is a published map for them on the forums. similarities: an area with a bunch of cities from the same alliance. 11. What are the benefits of joining an alliance that has a land claim? What happens to players who are part of a land claim and for (insert any of a number of things) decide they don't want to be in that alliance anymore? The benefits depend on the individual alliance and how they administer the land claim. As for players that leave the alliance, again depends on that alliance and why they left, if it is for civil reasons then probably nothing will happen to them. 12. What happens to players who may not be part of warring land claim alliances? Will they be left in peace? For the most part reading the current claims, yes they will be left alone to do whatever they want. 13. What happens to independents in land claim areas in a time of war? Will their cities be razed by opposing forces? Will they be conscripted to help the land claim alliance in its wars? If the opposing forces try to raze indy cities they will bring more alliances to the war against them(any alliance the indy is in or just some random nice alliances in GC). If the land claiming alliance tries to tax/force them to join in the war on their side then the land claiming alliance would find itself with a lot more enemies. So in effect I am saying, yes this could happen but is highly unlikely due to the repercussions that could be meted out by neutral alliances to the original conflict.

Here are the official responses of T-SC to the above questions
1. T-SC made its land claim mainly to reduce the chances of us losing a terraform(read my profile) because someone else has a city land while we have a city enroute to a terraformed location. 2. We request that you do but we do have the discretion clause in our land claim so if you don't we may simply ignore you but honestly that will only happen if you chose a really bad spot that is further then 10 sq from any good spots that we can think of so if we do ignore you that should tell you something. If we don't ignore you then our first step is to send you an IGM if you don't respond in a reasonable time we will IGM your leadership to open up negotiations. if you and your alliance leadership ignore our IGMs then we will be forced to send siege units at your city 3. Read our profile, read our post on the alliance land claim topic. If you have any more questions on this send me an IGM, I will answer as soon as I have time(remember I do have RL commitments and it may take me a few days to actually sit down and come up with a good answer for you) 4. We have already mapped out coords for most good spots inside our claim and have them on a list that our newer members refer to when they are looking for spots, our vets tend to ignore the list and find their own spots. 5. We believe that cities belong to the player and not the alliance so regardless of what alliance you are in if you have a city inside of our claim and have not violated any of our procedures to get it there we will leave you alone to play the game any way you see fit(unless we are at war with your alliance). 6. We can't answer this because we will no longer be leaders of T-SC in this instance and wont be able to tell you what the people that deposed us will do(odds are we will be gone from the game anyway so our opinion wont matter). 7. Yes, we are already discussing expanding our claim in multiple directions. Most of the issues we are having though is we are not yet at a point where our claim is out of decent spots(from our standpoint) and when we do expand we will probably have to open up discussions with multiple other alliances to safeguard their settlement rights along with our own. 8. This is not alliance specific so we will not answer here. 9. Yes, you can hunt/harvest inside our claim as long as you follow the current hunting/harvesting guidelines for distance. If we approve a player to send a city inside of our land claim we consider that player to now "own" his 10sq and it is his responsibility to police harvesting of his resources. 10. This is not alliance specific so we will not answer here 11. Well if you plan on settling inside of our land claim and are a member of T-SC then you will have access to plenty of resources since we have multiple large accounts already in the alliance that are overflowing on basics and making plenty of T2 items as well as an officer core that tries to coordinate as much as possible at the alliance level instead of the player level to make production more efficient. If you would like to join T-SC you can do so either through DSA which is the Dominion's training alliance or by applying to Takeda Shingen or anyone else he appoints directly. If you do leave T-SC in a peaceful/civil manor then we will just ask you to stop checking any internet sheets we gave you links to and then ignore you. If you leave and start hurting our goals then we may start attacking you to protect our own interests but our policy tends to be a live and let live policy. 12. If you are not in an alliance that is at war with us and have not done any hostile actions towards us then there is no reason for us to bother you in any way. If one of our members does do something that you feel is hostile towards you please notify one or more(if more then one please let them all know who you did notify so we don't have multiple people trying to deal with the issue) of our officers(knight commander or above) 13. As far as T-SC is concerned, if you are not in an alliance that is confeded with us or at war with us then we will leave you alone, if you are at war with us then yes we will attack you, if you are confeded with us we will most likely help you defend depending on our military plans which if you are confeded with us you will be involved in. |

I strongly believe that you can always fight your way inside a claimed land.
To all newbies, don't be afraid to go inside Broken Lands, it's huge and there's a lot of spot for you there. |

the question i don't see addressed here is what becomes of players with significant clusters in a claimed area. in most cases, i suspect they will be asked not to build upon their cluster, which will almost certainly cause a clash.
in any case, most of the OP could be summarised "it depends"...which makes Aurordan's accusation of bias seem like bias in itself.

TRIVIUM's Response:
1. What are the purposes/rational behind land claims? How will this impact the game into the future? The members of TVM approved a land claim by majority vote. In short, it is a way to police the prime locations throughout the alliance hub, ensuring these locations will be occupied by members and allies. The proximity of allied cities during wartime is highly advantageous. Land claims are a tool used for strategic purposes. There is certainly a distinctly military purpose behind land claims but they are also a declaration of intent by the alliance. There is some amount of convenience to the alliance in declaring a claim although it is also useful for players not allied with the alliance since they will know, in advance that a location within the specified area may be disadvantageous to them given the limited options for future expansion of their empire. 2. Do I have to obey the land claims? Land claims are a player made policy and are therefore not a game mechanic. Following such policies is strictly up to the individual player. Illyriad is a game of consequences and any decision will likely have at least one. 3. Will I be welcomed into an area that is claimed by an alliance? How will new players be incorporated into land claims alliances? Are they welcome? Excluded? Where can new players go to find out more about each land claim alliance? TRIVIUM's policy for cities that come into its zone one claim is to open communications with the player and to establish that the city is, indeed located within the boundaries of the claim. Beyond that, the alliance will handle relationships as it always has, that is: if you are at war with us, we will move against you and if you are not, we will not. As with any alliance, read our profile. 4. What is stopping the claiming alliance from using me to find them good city spots and then taking the spots for themselves? TRIVIUM does not remove active player cities from any location unless thoroughly and irrevocably provoked or in a state of war against the city in question. 5. What happens to players with towns in an area that suddenly goes from being free and open territory to a land claim? What options do said players have? Will they be able to stay in the territory and still be able to join another alliance not affiliated with the land claim alliance? This does not apply to TRIVIUM because our claim is already in place. 6. What if the leadership of the claiming alliance changes in the future and they change the policy on allowing independents? This is an unanswerable question at the alliance level. 7. Is it likely that current claims may change shape in the future? TRIVIUM has no reason or intent to alter the claim, whatsoever. 8. Do you ever think it is likely that BL will be taken over completely by land claims, making it really hard for new players to explore and settle? No. 9. May I hunt/harvest inside of someones land claim? TRIVIUM's claim specifically addresses this by declaring hunting/harvesting as the purview of the individual. The claim has no jurisdiction over this subject. 10. What is the primary differences between alliance "clusters" and land claims? What are the similarities? In the scope of the TRIVIUM claim, there is no difference. 11. What are the benefits of joining an alliance that has a land claim? What happens to players who are part of a land claim and for (insert any of a number of things) decide they don't want to be in that alliance anymore? The claim gives no specific benefit to the individual members beyond discouraging non-members from taking possible locations and it does not address, therefore does not pertain to players leaving the alliance. 12. What happens to players who may not be part of warring land claim alliances? Will they be left in peace? The answer to this question has nothing to do with claims. In short, players who are not involved in war will be left alone. 13. What happens to independents in land claim areas in a time of war? Will their cities be razed by opposing forces? Will they be conscripted to help the land claim alliance in its wars? As stated above, peaceful players are left alone. Should an alliance at war with TRIVIUM take the unlikely and very ill conceived tack of attacking unaffiliated, non-warring players in the TRIVIUM territorial area, we will defend said city as if it were our own. This is a strategy that would certainly build good will but beyond that is advantageous due to the fact we would be destroying more enemy troops. |

TRIVIUM handles cities of non-allied players the same, regardless of the quantity. The more peaceful cities in the territory, the less room for enemy cities to come in, so for players in the claim, we have no problem with them adding cities. |

I dunno how that reply makes any sense to anyone. The point is, they land in LC, you/some send a letter of encroachment or we'll help you move crap. Would they have made the CHOICE to move into a lc if they KNEW they would be asked to leave, or join? c'mon.
