Hello, Illyriad!

We have some exciting news: a new ranking factor has officially gone live for Faction Play's Alliance Ranking Algorithm! This a major update to the ranking system and, similar to the announcement of the "NHM" ranking factor, we feel that it is important that players and alliances understand how this ranking works, since it involves behaviors and decisions that alliances can make to "sculpt" their rankings with player-led factions.

Introducing "DiploRels"

The new ranking factor looks specifically at diplomatic relationships between alliances -- hence its name "DiploRels." This is how it works:

  • The system looks at alliances that have positive rankings with a player-led faction.
  • It then looks at all of the NAPs, Confederations, and War declarations that that alliance has with other alliances.
  • If the positively-ranked alliance has NAPs or Confederations with alliances that have negative rankings with the faction, this will incur a ranking penalty on the positvely ranked alliance.
The rationale is that, if a faction's allies are aligned with their enemies, that would realistically mar the relationship between the faction and the positively-ranked alliance. As a result, alliances need to be mindful of the ranking consequences that setting a NAP or a Confed might have with their Faction-based counterparts.

We're not giving any specific numbers or values for the DiploRels ranking factor, but we can give you a few more hints:
  • Each infraction is assigned a value, and all of those values are then averaged to create one composite effect on an alliance's total ranking with the faction. The infractions are not added up. We did this to "soften" the effect of the ranking factor on alliance rankings (though we reserve the right to change this down the line).
  • NAPs and Confederations have different negative values.
  • DiploRels only looks at alliances who are positively ranked with Factions; there is no component to look at negtively-ranked alliances' diplomatic relationships at this time.
  • There is a value for War declarations as well. We''re leaving the details of this a bit fuzzy, but players will be able to figure out the rationales for how a War declaration may affect rankings.
Some Case Studies

DiploRels has already made some waves in the rankings. Here are a handful of quick, interesting examples:

  • ELVES:
    • EE fell from 0 to -2.
    • H? fell from -9 to -10.
    • Holding Corp. [HC] moved up from 5 to 7.
  • Dlord:
    • Æsir fell from +4 to +3.
    • MAIAR fell from -4 to -6.
    • DRACO fell from 2 to -2.
    • DROW went from 0 to +2.
  • HUMAN:
    • Sand fell from +1 to 0.
Why Does Any of This Matter?

It's a fair question. You probably don't wake up in the morning, concerned about what your alliance's rankings are with the factions. This is because, for the past 9 months, we've been slowly building the core of Faction Play in the background. In 2021, alliance rankings will have increasing value (or penalty) in Faction Play events and initiatives.

Faction Play will be launching a major, new gameplay that directly ties alliance ranking into engagement opportunities with factions. Stay tuned!
