Topic: Extortion disguised as diplomacy? Posted: 03 Mar 2013 at 19:22 |
I've been dealing with a player the last week or so who has settled within my 10x10 comfort zone. A high ranking member of a respectable alliance/confed has demanded $1M for my 'transgressions'. I come online today to see his demands has increased to $100M because I laughed about it in GC. Let me respond to his demands here...I never gave in to scare tactics, bullying or extortion before and i'm not about to start now. I played games where extortion, bullying, backstabbing, etc...was the norm and was required in order to excel at the game. I was quite good at those games. I'm not interested in dealing with that here. Don't place a town within my 10x10 area and i'm one of the nicest players you'll meet. Ask any of my neighbors or anyone i've had dealings with. Now, hopefully this player has been embarrased enough to stop his rather mundane scare tactics. If not and you're all butthurt, hurry up and get your alliance/confed to destroy all my towns so I can find another game to play.

Yes that sounds like a horrible situation.
But quite frankly, i'm tired of everyone running to the forums for all problems like this. Especially given that you could just have well settled in his 10x10 and came to forums to try and push your own agenda and extort him.

Except for your city named "Will be Exodusing", I don't see anyone within a 10 square radius of you.

I'm sorry, but your initial post was somewhat confusing to me.
Someoned settled within 10x10 of your confort zone and are now demanding 100million as payment for your "transgression"?
That does not make any sense.
Would you care to explain better, cause i really think some bits and pieces are missing there.

Forum posts just inflame most issues. So does discussing problematic situations in GC or even AC. Forward the payment demands to their alliance leader with a short summary and a polite request to resolve the dispute.

war is a good way to settle everything, especially in a war game, but i admire the passive-aggressive threats but usually that always backfires....just ask my former bfs

Have to agree with Tyrande I don't really get what all of its about, specifically the transgressions part - what did you do exactly and which city?
But I am however going to point out that mocking players, that present you with an ultimatum, in GC is - with no exceptions - a wrong strategy, a dumb strategy even. Adding to this, I boldly assume that the 100M gold demand is their way of saying "How you like them apples then?" rather than a genuine need/desire of your funds - therefore I don't think "extortion" is the appropriate term to use here, rather "correction" or "intimidation" perhaps.
When players in many alliances have recently lost cities, don't go out of your way to PO people. A lot of sore toes out there so watch your step.
Respectfully Tordenham

Judging by the use of the word "butthurt" I am surprised you haven't been attacked sooner.
