For moral and philosophical reasons, as well as being probably the only alliance with good reason to choose a basics bonus instead of food for a tournament region, the Dwarven Lords chose stone in Turalia after the first seasonal tournament.

How much sense did that make, and what should the basics bonus be at really?

Since they produce the most, fully built cities account for most of the benefit of the Totem bonus. Not only do these cities often have more basics production than they need, each food produced brings in 4 gold in a fully taxed city. As a rough guess food is probably 3x or more valuable than basic resources, which is why virtually every Totem was chosen for a 5% food bonus instead of 10% for one of the basics.

Fully taxed, the food bonus in a 7 food town is 2800g/hr with no caravan work involved, while a 5 field basics bonus is 1250g/hr at a price of 1g per, if you had a 100% demand for that basic. The minimum bonus for food is on the markets at 1400g/hr if you take 1g per basic and 2g per food as the market prices, so even the minimum food bonus is better. This 2 - 1 ratio still holds true looking at production where the food to feed a cow is twice as profitable as the wood and iron to make chainmail, meaning that the maximum basic benefit for any 7 food player is less than the minimum food benefit.

The actual basics bonus meanwhile is lower than 1250g/hr and as low as 0 if every town has a surplus. It's hard to figure what the true average ratio is but 3 - 1 should be close. In that case the basics bonus should be 15% - but then where all accounts would gain from a food bonus, not all would from a particular basic - so it should probably actually be 20% to make up for the players with no gain in an average alliance. For what the basics boost really should be for Totems I suppose the smart and easy thing to do would be to add 5% to any bonus that got basically unused in the last tournament.

Dwarven Lords is different though. To figure out the "correct" minimum basics bonus for Totems, you have to take a guess at what the g/hr benefit of a basic bonus would be for an alliance like Dlords.

Not all dwarf towns are army towns and not all their army towns are infantry. So a 75% demand for stone in a dwarf is probably generous. Since I'm not trying to account for towns that are not fully built and would have a 100% demand for stone it makes sense to make a few generous guesses on how valuable stone is for dwarfs. A 75% demand for a 1250/hr bonus is 940/hr. That looks crazy when the food bonus for similar towns is 2800/hr. But there is a much higher maximum practical benefit. Suppose an average 10 city kingdom has 3 towns with 50k stalwarts and 3 infantry quarters in each of those towns, and the stone bonus makes it easy to build another infantry quarters in those towns. If you assume the player has no need for the 1100 iron per hour the g/hr boost of the 4th infantry quarters is 5625g/hr. Average out the seven 940g/hr towns with those three towns and you get a bonus of 3000g/hr.

Looks like the Dwarf's very close vote on food vs. stone actually made sense. Clap The maximum stone benefit is probably about the same as the maximum food benefit. That applies only to alliances that are all one race and have a particularly obvious best troop. Military alliances might have a similar dynamic as well as having less than the normal food benefit. The basics boost of 10% is set at the absolute minimum, where it probably comes into par for most alliances at around 20%.

I am currently struggling with why bother with tournaments since 99% choose food anyway.Everyone gets the bonus, not just the winners.
