Topic: Epidemic vs. Crows Posted: 06 Mar 2013 at 18:28 |
After lengthy debates, which involved large quantities of beer and wine, the dwarves of my realm and I have accepted the 10x10 radius rule used by most of Illy. Overpopulation will ruin the game. I have come to terms with the Crow leadership, who in the end dealt with this proud, stubborn dwarf fairly.

It seems the truth is out; this was a poor excuse by both sides to partake in the consumption of copious amounts of alcoholic beverages.
Well played, Epi, well played.

The 10 sq rule is pure and utter idiocy. It has almost no basis in reality, and is almost entirely based on something similar to small man syndrome (no dwarf pun intended, this is not a rascist post).
Has anyone here claimed sov past 5 sq's away from their town? yes? and what was the net benefit of that claim? very small? ok, great.
Im flexible and open to suggestion. Since the mechanics of this game are mathematic, if someone can show me evidence that the 10 sq rule is necessary, and not an arbitrary number cooked up by a group of drunken gamers, I will retract this statement and eat my hat.
(sorry to split my infinitives, I'm in a bit of a hurry)

The reason for 10 sqs is to create conflict. That is the sole game purpose.
"Do not trespass. Trespassers will be shot on sight."

I always assumed a different function for the 10 square rule. Because the newb ring is so densely packed, it prevents players from relocating inside the ring. Once you are large enough, you are effectively expelled from the ring and into the greater world. The 10 square rule helps to mathematically normalize the distribution of players across the landscape. Didn't Stormcrow say as much in a developer article somewhere?

Perhaps a few people do, but 5 squares from your town plus 5 squares from my town equals 10 squares. That's how far apart we need to be to not overlap.

the first i heard of it outside of the game mechanic was from H?, though whether or not they were drunk at the time of the forum post, i couldn't say. (i'll wager that H? is equally dangerous drunk or sober, so i'm not sure the question is material.) spacing cities more widely has benefits beyond the claiming of sov, including a reduction of accidental conflicts over harvesting animals...but as trade v2 had not yet been implemented when it was introduced, i couldn't say what caused H? to create their policy.
