Based on what we know about the crafting of some of these rare items. We probably need to research and find either a place or a trainer to LEARN the necessary requirements for the bow. Searching sacred oaks got me nowhere. Now i am onto the houses of spirits. Also all the Elven faction hubs to see what they have to say So who knows what i will find

Just to add to the discussion, I have crafted over 20K specialized armor in 1 town, and no discovery. I think it is similar to the steamtastic brewery. We have to send certain units to certain locations to unlock it.
I have tried dispatching diplo units to dwarven faction hubs, with no success.
I doubt this involved a matter of chance. It wouldn't be fair for some players to unlock instantly, and some have to wait forever.
I originally thought that the quest system could of been used to unlock the specialty weapons/armor. But i have not had any luck with that either.

Brandmeister - how many crafted items have been made by Illyriad players? Just in the ballpark.

Tor, that's now how statistical math works. The success equation would be 1-(1-S)^N, where S is the individual chance of success, and N the number of attempts. Consider how many units and crafted items have been made by all Illyriad players. The value for S would have to be preposterously tiny for nobody to have discovered it after such a large N. I am not saying the discovery isn't tied to crafting or troops, I am saying that mathematically it would be nearly impossible for it to be a random chance of discovery with no other rules.

He did not say "work it out", he said "and some of the veteran players will find that they will have to work to get these discoveries." The phrasing that suggested doing something laborous of some kind - which I at the time assumed referred to research, but which could refer to anything. Also, you call it a statiscical impossibility, but for the sake of example lets say that the unlock % is 0,001, you'd have to build 100k advanced bows to be sure the discovery unlocked. Add to that the minimum reqs to trigger the discovery which could have been put in place to prevent players from gaining the discovery in the first attempt (which would suck for those having to do 50k+), and the fact that not all players crafting work with bows, I'd say my theory still has some merit. But its still on a speculative level of course.

I'm not working on this at all, but my suspicion is that it involves visiting a number of different map areas with a specific unit type. Similar to the Statues mystery. Perhaps visits to racial faction hubs (unless that's been tried already).

I recall SC mentioning that we "would have to work for it" back when crafting was introduced. In truth it could mean anything, but it kinda suggests to me that we would have to produce large amounts of weaponry before the discovery unlocks. It could be a 0,001% chance for each crafted item or some such.
