spying is always a major part of any game and right now the game functions encourages the action, also people have to remember this is a game and its sandbox. there are methods to prevent spying and to discover these actions using other game functions. but we have to also remember as a sandbox you want many different variables to exist and not have a stagnant game play. right now so many of the possible game variables have not even been discovered or played. i was narrowed minded once about how the game should be played but now i realize what an amazing wonderful game the devs have provided and i encourage them to keep adding different functions to make this a stimulating experience to the illyriad players. dual alliance playing can currently be done and abuse of functions is only defined by breaking the liberal illyriad rules and not to be determine by individual players. lets keep an open mind and accept different playing styles, there is no defined winning or losing in illyriad or one type of play style, there are only egos of individuals that come from outside of the game.

The fact that Tord was unable to stop himself from indulging in the type of propaganda that has been hallmark of the alliance known as Harmless? since the game began, undermines the credibility of his opinion. The truth is that many players and alliances have long used alts to spy and gain information on others. Harmless? is not least amongst them. Neither is Res.
...but to return to the the point of thread. I think that the proposal for dual nationaility or membership will actually detract from one of the main objectives of the game ie to create and sustain an alliance and make it prosper within the sandbox that is "The Illyriad". Dual membership will mean that individual players will have many loyalties rather than commiting themselves to one set of players with a view to creating a flourishing alliance.
"The Illyriad, as such , is an alliance based game. Where people come together and build, create and cooperate for the good of the alliance. The proposal for dual or even multi membership of alliances, however ,reduces everything down to the needs and wants of the "individual" player which, I think, would lead to alliances becoming meaningless. I fear that the resulting effect will be to reduce the game to nothing more than a glorified social network.

People change alliances all the time, use alts, use (and sometime abuse) account sitting... If anything, being invited to visit AC would be more clear and honest because everyone would know who you are and you would be marked as a guest. And presumably you wouldn't even be invited to join AC unless people already in that alliance knew you. If spying is an issue the person who invited a visitor could just as easily have simply told the person everything that was going on in the alliance...
As you said, this game does involve war. It also involves peaceful interactions, building, trade, many types of conversations, diplomacy, helping new players etc. etc. I think allowing alliance visitors could add a lot more to the (much larger) second category than to the relatively small category of war. And if you are the type of alliance that worries about secrets... then don't allow visitors to your alliance. Many other alliances are much more open and would welcome visitors just as they welcome the current changing-alliances-many-times type of visitor. This game is designed to allow different styles of play. I don't want to force you to use alliance guests, just to allow alliances that want them to have that option.
This is a little bit of a war game and a lot of a trade, building, diplomacy and (let's admit it) socializing game. Allowing diplomatic guests to converse with other alliances would add some realism and add some levels to diplomacy and trade.
As you said, maybe it will add one more way to spy also for those few concerned about that issue but not careful to avoid it. But even that can add to the game.

I agree with Tordenkaffen - this would muddy the waters too much. Plus I can see this option being used as a spying tool instead of a "visitor" privilege. Since war is a part of Illy, we all know some players would use this feature to spy on enemy alliances. No Bueno

This would be much more open than an alt because it would be the same account publically listed. But... Tordenkaffen still makes a good point.
As someone who doesn't think of this game as a war game at all, I wasn't thinking of the weird issues that might happen if war was declared on one half of a dual citizenship or some other conflict.
Of course the game could just make the player pick one of the two alliances in that case. And of course that exact situation happens in the real world... But it wouldn't be nearly as simple as I was thinking.
So I vote for Rill's idea as the easiest. Or my second idea of guest alliance chat plus a special 'visitor' diplomat unit. This would basically be the same as Rill's idea but make it seem like part of the game instead of only a chat program.
I think the other things would be fun, but practically speaking if you can chat in AC you can already do most of the important aliance things anyways. xD

we have account sitting rights which allows u to sit two accounts per account, gosh during the day i am often in up to 8 different alliances when people switch u in and out. heres a hint, often alliances invite confederated people in to talk group strategy or to help them in certain specialize duties. its a good tool that allows confederation agreements to be just as important as alliance membership as well as stresses the importance of individual agreements with other players. in this game you never know who is actually who unless u know how to use certain game techniques.

Hopefully much the same thing could happen once we get player-run chats. Alliances could create chats that would include alliance members plus anyone who is invited to join the chat.
Something to think about would be introducing a mechanism for "guest privileges" that would allow people to see alliance chat. (Unless the Dome of Silence is lowered.) OK, I'm being a little facetious here, but I could see some advantages to that.

Yes.. but only 2! These ideas would allow more flexibility. Plus many people don't want to go to the trouble of running an alt just to try out different things.
