A battle outcome is determined by comparing the total attack value of the attacking units (given bonuses and penalties for terrain, commanders, etc.) with the total defense value of the defending units (on a proportional basis depending on what they are defending against, given bonuses for terrain etc.)

For most purposes you look at effectiveness relative to three different measures:  build cost (cost of inputs required to make the unit), upkeep cost and build time.  Cavalry may have higher absolute attack and even defense values, but have lower defense values relative to build cost, upkeep cost and build time.

Your understanding is incorrect.

Defending units defend with a specific defense value. The attacker determines the attack type (multiple if the attacker mixes troops). Casualties are the percentage of the winner divided by the loser, determined by which number is bigger when adjusted for all factors.

Once you factor in the city wall, bows are the best defenders against infantry and bows. Spears defend best against cavalry, and somewhat against infantry, on an upkeep adjusted basis. There are a few exceptions based on terrain, but generally this is how Illyriad battles are fought.

If I understood the battle mechanics correctly, the defence value of your units determine how many of them get killed if you are attacked, but it's their attack value that determines how many of the attackers get killed.

Being still a small player, I consider my defensive armies just as a deterrent. Any average sized veteran player would be able to squash me if he/she so pleases, so my only hope is to make it not worth his/her while to attack me by causing as many casualties as I can.

By looking at this table: http://www.puzzleslogic.com/illy/troops.html you get the impression that spears and ranged units give you the best value for money for defence but, considering what I said before, wouldn't it be better to just stack my city with T2 infantry and cavalry (which could be also more useful for hunting)?
