so the solution is an old cold war trick, install a fail safe. they go half way then you get a message asking to proceed with an accept button or return button (this would probably create an issue in programing) then 48 hours after receving the message the army continues even is no recall or go ahead is issued

Thank you HonouredMule for the information, I didn't know of that and that is basically the sort of thing that I would like to see. Just because without it it's a bit annoying.

Eventually messengers will be able to give orders as well, so you could send City A's troops from point B to point C. I don't know when that's happening, but it'll be a real game-changer for turnaround time at "border" wars and help increase the pace of the game (at least in post-planning stages of operations).

I think he means after the recall button has expired it would be nice to recall them half-trip, but I am not sure.

You can send messengers to an army camping on the map, which will then recall it.
Messengers are a diplomatic unit you can obtain in your consulate provided all pertinent technologies are researched, hope it helps!

One thing I currently hate is if you send your army to reinforce, and it goes but then you happen to need it elsewhere, you're a bit stuck. I think it would be good if you could recall a marching army and let it march back to your town instead of having to wait for it to complete the journey, the reinforcement and then the trip back.
