Honestly, hI consider elite hyunits a vaste of resources.
Dey cost twice as many resources on average, for (often significantly) less dan twice as much power.
Beyond dat, hI build votever gets me da biggest numbers fastest, vhile doink as little damage to my advanced resource stockpiles as possible. As an orc, dat means hI generally make spears and cavalry, vit a city specializink in each (to allow for sovereignty bonuses). If hI am runnink low, hi will switch to producink infantry for a while to eat up all da excess blacksmith stuff hI've surely been producink.
Orc archers are veird, not bad but veird to build resource vise (spear and leather), and bows are hyuseless, so dey get traded away for other stuff.
But hI hef a pretty large turnover. If hyu's mostly peaceful, hI'd imagine da lower upkeep on advanced hyunits might be vorth it? but hI doubt hit.

the advantage of elite units is time if you have the capability to keep T2 in que nonstop then they are the way to go ill run the numbers when i get home, unless some1 else does it, that shows the attack str gained in 24hrs production of T1 v T2

what about siege? they count as an army unit
and T2 troops are better than regular troops, so i would make T2 when you can.

You gotta take the time and resource costs into mind.
T2 are better when you need them faster. T1, a few of them anyways, give more bang for the buck.
Building up troops during peacetime? Go for the bang for the buck. During wartime? Go for the quickie. (But take into account what you can actually build in a sustainable way.)

1.There will be situations whereby you will not have the luxury of deciding the location of battle. 2. Different units perform differently in different terrains.
Considering these two points you should ALWAYS (whether you specialize in unit per city or not) have all 4 unit types at your disposal. And, (in my opinion) as has been demonstrated Tier 2 unit types are better considering all factors. ESPECIALLY for your commanders.

Some interesting thoughts/suggestions there which will give me plenty to think about.
Looking at the majority of posts I am guessing that, for now anyway, there is no real specific build types so mostly it comes down to experimentation and what works best for you - aside from the basic building of course.
Thanks to all who have taken the time to answer, I appreciate it - if during my time here I find a better way I will let you know. I'm not that technically minded, nor clever, so don't hold your breath on that!
