Topic: Army Make-Up Posted: 08 Nov 2010 at 16:44 |
Greetings to the general community.
I have been here a little while now and seem to be doing reasonably well (it is difficult to tell of course as this is my first time here so I have no way to measure that).
As I have decided to stay (I will try to be more active in the forums, but that is a little difficult when you don't have a clue what you're talking about! ), it is time for me to try to gain a better insight.
So, I was wondering if there is a guide (or post) somewhere which tells you, or at least gives a reasonable idea, of what should comprise an army make-up. I have trawled through the forum but can't seem to find anything, so my apologies if I have missed it somewhere.
I am Human, so that would be my main interest at this point, but if there are guides on others too that would be useful.
Thank you in advance to those of you taking the time to respond.

Hi Baldrick,
Different people work in different ways regarding their forces, some run with just attacking troops, others run their setup as defensive troops, some like a mixed balance. Some people run this into towns as well with 1 town only making archers, another town just swordsmen and so on. The next thing is how to work your commanders EP again like their forces they can run them as attacking commanders or defensive. The question it all comes down to is how you want to run your army ?

Thanks Waylander, oddly enough I suspected you might be the first to respond
I am currently working on a mixed balance - I have no particular plans for aggression but as I have not yet joined an alliance, I am fairly sure that others may have plans regarding me and my little empire! So of course, should that happen, I will need to be in a position to respond.
I have more or less got the idea of the commanders, it is just the troop make-up that I couldn't decide. As you know the Humans have a range of troops, so it is a little difficult to decide what type, and how many, to include to make a 'reasonable' army. This is further complicated by the effects of terrain on different troops and their effectiveness
If there are none currently available, do you know of any plans to write a 'basic' sort of guide for newbie players like myself (I am sure there are a large number of players in the same position)?

All races have the same 'range of troops'.
Humans excel at cavalry, masters of the plains. Not so much in the mountains/hills/forests of Illyria. Their 2nd Tier archers are pretty good for a non-elf. They excel on mountains and hills.
Forests are your weak points when it comes to terrain.

Thanks Zangi, that is useful to know - it doesn't exactly answer my question, but it is very useful

Yea, it doesn't. But if you use the ethos of fight where you are strong and give where you are weak.... mix of those 2 types can work out for ya... and/or specializing in one or the other as offense/defense.
Its mainly the fact that human infantry and spearmen are not as versatile/specialized. Which the archer/cavalry excel in their uses compared to these two.
Also, only archers 'excel' at defending against archers. At least in an efficient manner...
Yea... there is no 'best' troop make up. People build to what they want to do with what they know about the units they can build. Its just a lot easier to do one thing or another with a single type of troop.

Thanks again - I will follow that bit of advice and keep 'experimenting' to see if I can find the right balance.

You should build units of all kinds.
I prefer to build only elite units for all the kinds except cavalry, because you can benefit of their speed for raids.
I think it's better to build 4 commanders of heavy cavalry and 1 light cavalry for the light cavalry army (so you benefit for the speed too). Of course while you do not have the technology needed for adv cavalry you can use other commanders, but take care their speed is not smaller than the armies he commands.
Now for the armies, if you plan to attack on plains, focus on cavalry, if on woods infantry..... but as you will have to fight in all terrains, you will have to build everything.
Hope it helped.
Raritor (mail to my player if you have any questions)

That is very, very useful information there Raritor, thank you.
It seems that I have a little 're-structuring' to do - namely kill of some of the initial units I built (although I didn't build many as I suspected that waiting for the elite units would be better).
I have one other question for you, but as that would be more specific and so off topic, I'll mail you ingame.

i would specialize between your towns, a balance army isnt bad but will lose out to a specialized army of the same size most of the time
build certain units in a town ie cav in A archers in B etc that way you have individually specialized cities but balanced over your account also you can specialise your production buildings in ea city to cover the materials for each troop type
