I would say to enjoy your time on Illyriad, but I do not think you will last long with that attitude.

Oh am I new & strange? Coming along to the forum with foul twisted ideas & a weak sense of humour? I do apologise Ducky and very sorry I am to learn of your lobotomisation.

In an attempt to be patronising..Companies maintaining an ethical system relies in large part on their customers reminding them that they find great value in said system, well done Rill!

Quackers, if you'd like to offer a 'reason' like Rill has as to why it might be suboptimal, fine, but IG seem fairly competent, even if their CEO does seem to have misplaced some of his marbles. I have a friend who got stung 'doing' one of these things, but I have no sympathy at all for somebody who gives their cc details to a perfect stranger whilst drunk. Still, I'd say it's unethical to put people on sleeper contracts. I'm no expert in the field though one would expect to be able to find one morally respectable vendor in most industries.

I find nothing ethically suboptimal in the principle, anyway, though obviously practice is open to question.

You are correct ofcourse Rill, that there would be questions to be asked and policies to be considered by the company, but this is the case with every line of code & post that goes published or unpublished. If it is deemed to be counterproductive obviously one would not expect to see it.

Anyway mk2.

lol, the posting title I possess is available to anyone with more than 1000 points on the forum.  I am not a member of the Illyriad staff, and I do not even play one on TV.  So please feel free to challenge!  I responded only as another player.

I did not move the thread, although I suspect a moderator might have -- it originally appeared in the general questions portion of the forum.

With regard to Illyriad being affiliated with google and facebook, they do interact with facebook and google and people are referred here from those sites.  However, they are not more affiliated with them than other companies that do business on the Internet.

Making money is a good thing, and I hope the devs make a lot of it.  However their philosophy of how to make money holds them to a higher standard.  I direct you to their comments in "About Illyriad":

It is possible that carefully chosen free offers might show players who choose to participate the sort of respect and dignity demonstrated by Illyriad developers.  However, it seems that the effort required to select and monitor such offers would likely exceed the return, making them ultimately unprofitable.

If such can be achieved profitably while maintaining Illyriad's history of respect for the playerbase, then that would address the bulk of my concerns.

Did you move the thread? it is (I thought I did post it) in the suggestions forum. Apologies if it ain't so.

At any rate..

The posting title you possess implies an official position, but I'm currently under the impression the position is not official and thus challengable, so i'll reply ;)

In my opinion:

If IG so desire i'm sure they could find a non-interactive package that requires no information exchange whatsoever.

Sure, some of said operations are a long way from ethical, but imo it's about time ppl started letting govt make legislation rather than whining in their hundreds of millions about whatever the  axis of wikiboogle tell them to.

It is a revenue stream, making money is not unethical. It's never the wrong time to make money. It can be the wrong way, fine.

Illyriad is 'affiliated' with Facebook & Google. I fail to see this as an ethically high standard. The two largest breakers of (at very least spirit of) IP law in the world. Two companies that make billions out of users, rarely providing your average joe with any real idea of what information they're selling and for how much. If it's worth billions, ain't it funny that users never see any of that money?

ANY website can implement a system by which 'artificial' keywords are offered more weight than they reasonably deserve (or indeed call more hits) yet it doesn't matter as much as it might, ranking by keyword 'hits' alone died more than a decade ago.

*People who do not wish to partake do not have to.

*Under 13s should probably not be capable of partaking if it is accessed through the game interface.

Anyways..

Probably this would be better in the Suggestions portion of the forum.

You have the opportunity to "earn" prestige by referring new players to Illyriad.  When they use your link to join and grow to 100 population, you get 50 prestige.  Prestige can also be won in tournaments and competitions such as the writing contest.

I have experienced some of the "free" prestige opportunities used by other games.  Many appear to be scams that seek personal information to use in phishing scams or similar.  Even those that don't require participants to reveal significant amounts of personal information that it would be unwise to share with an anonymous information taker.

Others are very clearly created by companies whose job it is to "promote" certain websites in google search results but artificially creating hits on certain key words.  This distorts the validity of widely used search engines.

I can imagine that such programs would also be a headache to administer, given the large number of complaints they likely generate.  Having to parse through the available programs to identify those that meet the high ethical standards to which the Illyriad team holds itself would also be time-consuming.

In summary, I think it is a valid idea but there are too many issues with it to make it useful to implement at this time.

Forgive me if this is posted in ignorance, but...

In several browser based mmo's i've had the pleasure of pouring my life into there is/was the potential to purchase in-game credits (prestige) by performing circus tricks.

Activities such as filling in survey forms, watching selected adverts and the like would earn money for the game company whilst freeing the player-base from the need to think up imaginative excuses to feed their spouses or parents.

Whilst I'm sure this will have been considered in the past, I did not come across a suggestion of it in my browsings. Ofcourse, I will be requiring commission should you implement any proposal I proffer.

Long may your industry bring thee and thine much that glints and gleams.

Khazâd aimênu!
